No peace, no peace i find...just this old sweet song...
It wasn't until three years into their friendship, when Bones had been thisclose to losing Jim to that fucking psychotic ass Romulan that he realized the depth of his feelings for his best-friend-with-ocassional-benefits. He had decided to keep this realization to himself when Jim had cornered him in his dorm soon after they had returned to Earth.
"I love you." Jim had said simply, as if he were talking about the weather. Bones froze in place, having to will himself to turn and face Jim. When it became obvious that Bones had obviously lost the ability to speak, Jim continued.
"When I was on the Narada, when Nero tried to kill me -" Bones flinched at that statement, but Jim kept on. "All I could see was your face." he finished weakly, suddenly finding his shoes very interesting. It occured to Bones that Jim fully expected him to reject him. To insist that they stay friends and whatever the hell else they are. Within a few moments, Jim seemed to recover and brought his gaze back up to meet Bones.
"I love you." he repeated, though this time his voice cracked with emotion. "And...I think you love me too." Bones had never seen Jim Kirk look so nervous and unsure and his breath caught in his throat at the thought that he was the one causing this. In two strides he had reached Jim and pinned him up against the wall, cradling his face between his hands.
"Of course I love you, you damn idiot." he said before crushing his lips to Jim's - a familiar sensation but now with something completely....different added to it. Jim reacted instantly, his arms sliding up Bones' back and pulling him into Jim, as if he could get any closer.
Eventually, the need for oxygen made Bones pull away, but he made no move to step out of Jim's embrace. He ran his fingertips over Jim's cheek and he felt it move underneath him as Jim smiled widely.
"So, this is it right? You and me?" Jim asked, bright blue eyes searching hazel ones. Bones chuckled and pressed a quick kiss to Jim's lips before replying.
"You bet, kid."
Five years, one month, two weeks, and four days later............
Bones couldn't stop the contented sigh that escaped his lips as he stood out on the deck of the house he and Jim had rented. The mission was over - the first one, anyway - and they were just beginning a well-deserved extended shore leave. The Enterprise was undergoing a thorough retrofit in Earth spacedock and Jim had surprised Bones with two months in the Georgian countryside. He had resigned himself to spending the downtime on the Enterprise or the station so Jim could oversee repairs - San Francisco at best. when Jim had brought him here he had been very thankful, and very willing to show it.
This was probably why he was alone on the deck while Jim was dead to the world in the bedroom. Kid tended to fall asleep before his head hit the pillow after a good go 'round. And he calls me old man Bones mused, staring up at the sky as the moonlight filtered in through the trees. Joanna would be here in a few days, and he couldn't wait to sit out with her on this deck, pointing out constellations like they did when she was young.
His thoughts of Joanna were stilled when he felt familiar arms encircle his waist. Jim propped his head on Bones' shoulder and he instinctively leaned back into the man that he now confidently called the love of his life.
"Now I can see why you were always going on about this place." Jim muttered, his voice close to Bones' ear.
Bones didn't reply, knowing Jim didn't really expect a response. Eight years as friends and five years as lovers had led them to be able to say almost anything without words. He reached down for one of Jim's hands and linked it with his own, the twin platinum bands they had put on three years prior glinting brightly in the moonlight.
He isn't sure how long they stand there, staring at the moon and listening to the sounds of the wilderness (which is where they were - when Jim had said he wanted them to be alone he had meant it). Without realizing it, he begins to hum a simple melody.
He feels Jim snake himself around until he's facing Bones. He has a smirk planted on his face, his eyes practically twinkling with mirth.
"Why, Leonard McCoy, I do believe you were humming." he says.
"Go to hell." Bones replies, rolling his eyes, though he can't stop the smile that pulls at his lips.
"I can't wait to tell Uhura about this. Ooh, and Chapel. And Spock! They may die of shock! Well...not Spock. If anything we've put him through in the last five years hasn't killed him, nothing will." Bones' mind immediately goes back to the dual bachelor party - including the Orion stripper Sulu and Chekov had somehow convinced to wear a black wig and pointed ears. Though he didn't show it (except for an eyebrow raise that was of legendary proportions), Bones would bet the whole of the South that Spock's blood pressure had gone through the roof at that moment.
"Seriously though," Kirk continues after a moment. "What were you singing?"
"It's an old 20th century song. My mama used to sing it when I was growing up."
"So, let's hear it."
"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor not a pop star." Bones replied, but Jim simply stared at him.
Bones momentarily thought about refusing further, but if the last eight years had taught him anything, it was that Jim Kirk generally got what he wanted. So, with a sigh, he began to softly sing.
"Georgia, Georgia the whole day through. Just an old old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind." Bones began, and his breath hitched as Jim moved in closer and rested his forehead against Bones'.
"Georgia, Georgia a song of you come as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines." Almost instinctively, he and Jim began to move together, swaying slightly as he continued to sing.
"Other arms reach out to me, other eyes smile tenderly. Still in peaceful dreams I see the road leads back to you."
Bones' singing was interrupted by Jim pressing his lips to his. He felt Jim's tongue against his lips and opened his mouth, the feeling familiar but exhilirating. Eventually, they pulled away and Bones felt the words leave his mouth before he could stop them.
"I'm going to miss this when we're back on the Enterprise." He had sworn he wouldn't say anything and he mentally cursed himself. Starfleet was their life, and the Enterprise was Jim's other love. Bones had known going into this that being with Jim meant a life in space, and had long since accepted that he would probably spend the rest of his life following Jim Kirk around on his 'adventures' making sure he didn't get his fool self stabbed, blown up, or otherwise maimed to an extent where he couldn't fix it.
Jim pulled back enough to stare at him, and Bones cursed himself again at the confused look on his face.
"Do you not want to go back to the Enterprise Bones?" Jim asked after a moment.
"I want to be where you are." Bones grumbled, hating how weak he sounded. He knew it was pathetic, but it was a truth, even if it wasn't the one Jim was asking for. Jim studied him, and Bones felt a sudden chill when Jim pulled away from him. The blonde man paced across the deck, and Bones couldn't help the bubble of panic that was quickly building up inside of him.
After what seemed like an eternity, Jim stopped pacing and looked at Bones. There was no anger in his eyes, nothing to say he was upset, and Bones felt himself relax just a little. Jim moved closer to Bones before speaking.
"If you could have anything you wanted Bones, what would it be? If you could go anywhere, do anything?"
Bones was taken aback by the question, but figured it would be best to answer it as honestly as possible
"I'd stay here, in Georgia. I've missed enough of Joanna's life. She's growing up so fast, and conversations over video just aren't enough anymore." Bones tenatively reached for Jim's hand, wich he thankfully gave him. "I'd make a life here, with you. Where we could grow old together without me wondering about what space plague or Romulan or Klingon was going to try to take you away from me today." Bones let out a breath he hadn't even realized he'd been holding as he finished and steadfastly refused to look in Jim's eyes.
"Well then that's what we'll do." Jim replied, not missing a beat and Bones' head snapped up to meet his gaze.
"Bones," Jim continued, moving closer once again to Bones. "The last five years have been amazing. I've seen things I never even imagined existed. I've done and experienced things most humans will never do again. And yeah, if I could I'd probably be out there forever, but Old Spock showed me my life like that." Jim stopped for a moment, and Bones understood why. They rarely talked about Old Spock, or the alternate universe that only he and Jim knew about. Bones knew there were things about that life that Jim would give anything to have for himself. Like his father living to see him captain the Enterprise.
"He showed me a Jim Kirk that lived and died saving the world. But, that Jim Kirk didn't have you." Jim continued. "That Jim Kirk never had what you've given me. Even if you kick my ass on a daily basis, you've loved me even when I'm being an ignorant adrenaline-junkie bastard." Bones let out a low chuckle at this, and felt the tension ease from his body.
"So, if the least I can do for you is give you a quieter life, then that's what you'll get." Jim smiled widely, and Bones kissed him with a ferocity he didn't know he could have in the dead of night. He guided them back toward the bed, mistaking the distance from the deck to the unfamiliar bed and sending them both sprawling onto it rather ungracefully.
Bones rolled off of Jim, but kept his arm across the other man's waist as Jim shook with laughter.
"Nice one Bones." Jim manages between gasps. "You want a quieter life so I won't get myself killed and not thirty seconds later it's almost death by bed."
Bones resists the urge to swat at Jim and insteads pulls him closer, placing a gentle kiss on his lips.
"You know," Jim said, laying his head on Bones' chest after they moved into a more comfortable position on the bed. "I think I could like living in Georgia. Especially if you keep singing me 20th century love songs."
Bones' only response is to pull the blanket over both of them and pull Jim closer.
Still in peaceful dreams I see...the road leads back you...
