And let the ink be made of wine...

Hiked the Scout Trail (only five miles) in the rain on Saturday! It was fantastic and I have a few so-so pictures of that, but not with me right now. I have scant  connections to the internet right now because I'm staying pretty much all week at my parents' house. The hike was nice, though. Along the trail, we came upon a doe, approximately 30 yards away. She looked at us and we kept still. She shook her head continuously and stomped her feet in warnings and wariness to the other deer that may have been around. We stood there in stark stillness for about five minutes. It was great. Then we came upon a beautiful pond where monsters live. Fabulous.

We were a mess, though. Wet and sweaty...but we prettied up in time for Pittsburgh's Jazz Poetry Concert sponsored by City of Asylum. City of Asylum gives asylum to writers that are banned from their countries. It was a wonderful show mixing jazz performance with poetry. Renowned jazz musician Oliver Lake gave a stunning performance along with other musicians including Scratch University's professor Jahi Sundance. I personally loved the trumpet player, Peck Allmond. Outstanding. Writers included Gerald Stern, Lynn Emanuel, Terrance Hayes (all residing in Pittsburgh), Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, Cvetka Lipus, Roman Antopolsky, Nikola Madzirov, Rogelio Saunders, and Maryam Ala Amjadi.
There was a raffle at the end of the show. Len and I hurried out of the theater-area before the crowds so we wouldn't have to endure too much traffic (the performance extended beyond the two-hour slot). But Len's name was called while he was in the pisser, for he was one of three winners (out of hundreds!)! He won an awesome t-shirt and a little book, which he let me have (the book, that is). My mother is currently reading it. It was a wonderful night.

Speaking of my mother, she wrote a poem last night, entitled "Ike", after the hurricane. And it was honestly better than a lot of poems I've seen in workshops over the years. Seriously. I'm going to help her revise it to her liking and maybe see about publication.

I went to Barnes & Noble today (not for work) to chill. I came across new Bukowski books that I must have...asap. I also buzzed through an interesting book I'd like to purchase with my awesome discount soon, entitled Sidewalk. It's a sociological look/study of street vendors in New York City. Book vendors, to be more specific, and their lives, etc. It is an awesome book with engaging photographs.

I worked at Barnes & Noble yesterday for four hours and came home and drank wine until I was a fool. Len came to my parents' house and we went browsing for fish tanks (turtle tanks) so we can bring my turtles into the house for the fall/winter. As mundane as it sounds, it is terribly exciting and we are obsessing and stressing over every minute detail. I love that he loves my stinkin' turtles like they are his own damn children.

So, what else is ahead for Sarah,?

New Yinzer is hosting another reading on Wednesday that I wouldn't mind attending. I'll ask some people from class to join me. If you would like to join me, let me know. It's on Wednesday at 8:00; $4 cover charge. On Thursday night, Kevin and I (and whoever else would like to tag along) are going to Your Innver Vagabond Cafe for a reading. He signed us up to read during the open-mic. Exciting. I'll be more prepared this time. I guess I should start carrying my poetry around with me *gag* just in case spontaneous poetry-reading-phenomenons take place. (I am in Pittsburgh...).

Other than all that, everything has been the same. Driving/walking everywhere. Living out of my car. Sleeping next to an open window so to prepare myself for living in an open cardboard box in my future. Happy hobo. I shall come up with my own hobo name. Maybe you can help me out.

And my mother made the most amazing fried chicken yesterday.
