I just wanted to say that a great book I read last summer was "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"
It's heartbreaking, and evocative, and downright charming. Some of the language is stunning in the oddest of ways. I really really liked it.
One thing that I loved about moving into an apartment here is that only 2 people out of everyone that i knew had cars in university, and they lived on the other side of town. That means, no one had cars, so if you wanted to go to the grocery store, you had to walk or take a bus. Things you learn quickly: soda is heavy, and you stop buying it so that you can carry home soup or fruit, which can be heavy. You buy more vegetables and breads and lighter things.
I hardly, hardly drink soda anymore. If I do buy a six pack of diet coke, they sell "half cans" here. It makes you ration half a coke for whenever you would have a regular can. Now, I can't drink a whole can. All I drink is water, or orange juice (except for when I go out) and a half diet coke is seen as a treat :). It makes you a lot less dependent on caffeine, and is obviously better for you :)
I need to call relatives like crazy. Seriously. Even just my sister.
:) Thanks for such a good post !!
