Right. It's about time I actually make a post about these here in my own journal, instead of just in communities. Journal? What journal?
I've been doing cross stitch projects for years, but always from kits. Last summer I finally got around to attempting my own designs, and I've been having a lot of fun with them since. I actually started with a bigger project, which I only half-finished and wasn't very happy with. But that project had mini versions of various Doctor Who creatures and items, and I started working on smaller things. Then I tried to figure out what the heck I could make with those small designs, and ended up at bookmarks. Someday I'll get around to bigger projects (I've got one in the works now, actually), but...I have so many ideas for bookmarks! SO MANY. Most of them are Doctor Who, but I have various other geeky ideas as well. Eventually I may actually make some of those.
So! Have a pile of geeky bookmarks. I'll start with the few that I haven't already posted in
crafty_tardis.
First off, a quote from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. I haven't read many graphic novels (aside from manga), but I love Neil and kept hearing about how awesome this series is. So I borrowed it from the library, volume by volume, trying to time my holds so I didn't have to wait too long between books. Now I need to own it. All of it. As soon as I find something to use for money. I absolutely love the story and characters, and really want to attempt something with chibi Dream and Death. Because omg, chibi Dream and Death. If you like fantasy and/or Neil Gaiman, go read this series. If you don't want to buy it right away, it's totally worth waiting for on hold.
And after that long introduction, the actual bookmark! I was really happy about how the wings turned out.
Next is a Star Trek bookmark I made for
cannedebonbon. I started watching the series because of her, and while I'm not a really big fan I do have fun with it. The chibi Kirk and Spock patterns came from
black-lupin on deviantART, "T'hy'la" was Candy's suggestion, the hearts and holding hands bit was my idea (and I'm not a Kirk/Spock fangirl so that was just amusing and cute to me), and the badges are mostly just there to fill up space and make the whole thing bookmark-shaped. The badges were designed by me and therefore look less awesome than the rest of it. :P
And my last non-Doctor Who bookmark is from
LoadingReadyRun. It's based on their Creepy Doll plushie and shirts, which are awesome and adorable and not actually all that creepy. If you're not familiar with them you should check them out, they do geeky comedy videos every week, as well as an annual fundraiser for
Child's Play called
Desert Bus (they've just put up their first announcement of the year! I'm already excited. <3). And I promise I'm finished promoting other people now. ;)
And now for the Doctor Who bookmarks. I already talked a little about them in
my posts at
crafty_tardis, so if you're interested you can jump over there, and if you're tired of my ramblings you don't have to read more of them. Everybody wins!
Disappearing TARDIS:
Daleks:
Don't Blink:
The Angels Have the Phone Box:
Bowties and Fezzes:
Chrismas Dalek (I haven't taken a picture of the finished version yet, but I love this one):
Skittles Daleks That I Will One Day Get Around to Tweaking and Finishing, I Swear:
And that's it, for the moment. I'm currently working (slowly) on a K-9 design, solely because I asked someone "TARDIS or Daleks?" and he answered "K-9." So we'll see how that goes.
And now, as a reward for everyone who made it this far...shameless self-promotion! Yay!
I recently started a shop on Etsy for my bookmarks, called
The Dalek's Teahouse. It's got most of these Doctor Who bookmarks, as well as the Sandman one, and I've put up a few patterns for the bookmarks as well. The Christmas Dalek one should be going up in a few days. If you have any suggestions or requests, or just want me to hurry up with Skittles Daleks, let me know! If anything sells out, I'll put it back up for sale as soon as I can.
So I hope you like the bookmarks, and didn't mind my ramblings (or just skipped past them). I have a lot of fun with these, and I really love them. ^_^
