Supernatural is a show about the Winchester family who hunts supernatural creatures after Mary Winchester was killed my a demon. The show mainly focuses on the brothers Sam and Dean and their adventures while out hunting.

canon backstory:
When Dean was a boy his mother was killed by a demon. From that point on his father started to learn everything he could about supernatural creatures to hunt them down. Thus Dean and his brother Sam grew up knowing about supernatural creatures and were taught early how to fight and kill them.
Once old enough Dean went out to hunt on his own. Then after their father disappeared Dean and Sam went hunting together.

During season 2 of Supernatural Dean and Sam met Rose Tyler and she joined them on their hunting trips for a while.

the year that never was:
Martha met Dean and Sam on her travels and had a brief affair with Dean. Then they had to go their separate ways as Martha had to continue to execute the Doctors plan to save the world. Dean would have liked to help her, but had to try and find a way to get out of his deal with the crossroads demon.
relationships/sexuality:
Dean mostly has short affairs and one-night stands. Since he travels a lot he never stays long enough to have more. Besides that he once had a bad experience. In love with a woman he decided to tell her about his life and hunting the supernatural. She didn’t believe him and they broke up.
personality:
Dean is a strong person and usually seems to be a tough guy. Deep inside he however is a sad person, who feels lost and alone in the fight against evil.
Dean is also very loyal and would do anything for someone he loves, even sell his soul and go to hell.
