Stargate Universe is a Spin-Off series of Stargate SG-1. In Stargate SG-1 the american military and some scientists found a device called Stargate and figured out that it could be used to open wormholes to other planets. A secret project called Stargate Command was formed and teams were organized to go through the Stargate, explore other worlds, form alliances and eliminate potential threats.
Stargate Universe: About 14 years after the discovery of the Stargate an outpost of the Stargate progam, located on the planet Icarus, was attacked by aliens. The Icarus base was evacuated. But due to unfortunate circumstances a large number of evacuees ended up on an ancient space ship in another galaxy, millions of light-years away from earth. Without enough power to open a wormhole back to earth the expedition group is stuck in a very distant part of the universe and has to fight to stay alive.

canon backstory:
After dropping out of college Eli lived with his sick mother. While apparently looking for a job he spent most of his time playing online games. One of those games was created by the SGC and had an actual astro-physical Stargate problem included in it. Eli solved that problem and was recruited by the SGC. During his first off-world trip Eli ended up in another galaxy and got stuck there aboard an ancient spaceship.
