The Shadow did not normally see Sarah outside of the Nexus or a medical visit. He was surprised by her urgent text request to meet her. He obliged, meeting her in a low traffic area of the Nexus, dressed in full vigilante regalia.

She was standing stiffly. She had been crying. The Shadow was surprised. She hadn't written about anything amiss in her journal. "What did you want to see me about, Ms. Branigan?"

"Belle's dead. My pokemon." Her voice was low and dry. "Someone from the city discovered her. He decided to dissect her, to figure out what she was."

The Shadow had been around the Nexus long enough to knew what pokemon were. Disgustingly cute little animals, but sentient ones that were very loyal to their owners. It was a gruesome crime. But surely Sarah knew he was not the best person to turn to for sympathy. "I'm sorry for your loss," he replied. "What did you need me for?"

"I want you to show me how to hurt someone," Sarah replied. "Slowly."

"No."

Sarah blinked. "Why not?" She demanded. "You hurt others all the time, don't you? To get answers? Confessions? Why can't I?"

"Sarah." He stepped towards her, stared into her eyes. She glared back defiantly, but eventually looked away. They always did. "You are not a vigilante. You told me so yourself. It would turn yourself into someone you didn't want to be."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears and she wiped at them furtively. "You think I'm too weak to do it."

"No. I think you're too weak to do it and not let it change you." He frowned a little behind his scarf. "Whoever killed Belle needs to be brought to justice. But what you're thinking of, Ms. Branigan, isn't justice. Because you'd be hurt twice."

He watched Sarah mull it over, then relax a little. "All right," she replied. "Thank you." Later, The Shadow wondered if that's why Sarah came to see him after all -- to be told no.

I forgot to reply, I'm terribly sorry, but this is wonderful! He doesn't torture people often... but I wouldn't quite put it past him. On the other hand he's quite aware that there's a very thin line that keeps him from being a monster. This is a wonderful vignette... but Janitor Thorn would be so deeply upset. Perhaps he could hurt someone for her. ;-D
