If forced to pinpoint, I think I would say that Hillary Clinton's candidacy reaffirms one of the many, many (many!) reasons why I have always loved Bill Clinton: for all of his marital faults, the fact is that he chose to marry her instead of a name-changing, cookie-baking, pearl-wearing campaign wife. And so I am irritated by Cindy McCain in the same way I am irritated by Laura Bush and her freakish smile and cultivated blandness and lack of independent existence, and let us not forget her total of one year as a public school librarian that somehow allows her to claim the title of "teacher." I think it was Bill Maher (though I could be wrong) who said that Laura Bush is still "the proud stay at home mom...of two 24-year-old children."
