Gas leak causes evacuations in Carrollton
About 50 residents of the northwest Carrollton neighborhood and a neighboring school were evacuated for more than an hour Wednesday morning after a construction crew broke a gas main.
A back hoe digging on an empty lot on the 2900 block of Dublin Street hit the 2-inch main, causing a gas leak. Firefighters were called to the scene around 9:20 a.m., said Capt. Terry Hardy, a spokesman for the New Orleans Fire Department.
Crews from Entergy also rapidly came to the scene, while the New Orleans Police Department blocked off nearby traffic, Hardy said. The leak was repaired and residents were allowed to return by 10:40 a.m.
Because of a steady breeze and the higher-pressure nature of the line the gas dissipated quickly into the air, said Hardy. But as a precaution, the department asked residents within a 2-block radius to walk away to an evacuation point. Around 750 students and faculty at Lafayette Academy were also evacuated. Classes were resumed.
add this to canceled school because of power outages and water main bursting and getting a half day....
