Thoughts

Well, I got cut from the opera today. They decided that because it's Mozart, they're going to only use three stands of cellos in the pit instead of the usual: four. I was kind of disappointed-- we have all just gone through the loss of Mr. Behr, and I was looking forward to working with Andrew-- but now I have 28 more hours to do with as I please over the next three weeks. I'm going to try to make the most of them in terms of Music History studying and practicing for my recitals and grad school auditions. I think I'll also play some ad-hoc orchestra concerts that otherwise I wouldn't have had any time for; Robin's conducting Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" this weekend in a voice recital.

I just inadvertently left my car at school. I went directly to school after picking up my bow from having it fixed, and forgot that I had driven there. I've gotten so used to not having a car. Now I have to get up before 8am and walk over there to move it before it's ticketed. Oops.

It's interesting how our minds work. I got into my car today, and felt sad and nostalgic almost instantly, seemingly for no reason. I think it was a full five seconds before I realized I had left a CD in the player, and another 5 before I realized what I was listening to was the third movement of Mahler 6. I wonder if I'll ever stop associating that piece with being sad...

In order to save time and money, and make my daily menu a bit more interesting, I've been making casseroles of various kinds in large quantities and taking them to school for lunch and dinner. It's amazing how easy it is to come up with reasonably nutritious combinations that taste really good, even after a few days in the fridge. Basically, I come up with a carb base, some sort of protein, some vegetables, and anything to add extra flavor. I leave you with my best creation so far: Cook 4 servings of brown rice and add a can of black beans, a can of corn, and a can of tomatoes and chilis; mix well and serve warm. So simple, but so good! :-)
