It's been a crazy week. I kind of feel like I was in another world for most of it. Because I had no responsibilities after my exam on Wednesday, I drove up to Fort Wayne to see Charles. Once again, I had a great time-- I couldn't even stop smiling long enough for him to take a serious picture of me-- but just like last December, we have to face the fact that we live 700 miles away from each other (although now there's no sometimes-ex-boyfriend complicating the picture). We both acknowledge the romance, but agree that it's smarter not to jump into something too quickly. I guess we'll see where the balancing of reason and emotion will take us... It's funny, though, because half of the questions you would normally have to ask someone when you're getting to know them are just not there; I know what his parents do, how many siblings he has, where he grew up, what kind of high school he went to, what his religious background is, etc. In many ways, it's really nice, because it's easy to be comfortable so quickly, but having parents that have known each other since before either of you were born can put a lot of pressure on a situation. This must be how everyone felt back in the days when everyone dated and married within their hometown.
But now I'm back in Bloomington and back to work. After slacking on practicing this week, I felt really guilty. And although I know it's more important for me to be prepared for my lesson, I hated going into that exam Wednesday morning feeling unprepared. I need to get a lot done this weekend; there is so much music I have to learn, re-learn, or polish to performance readiness. For my junior recital, I have Bach Suite No. 3 (CM), the Mendelssohn Sonata in D Major, and Requiebros by Cassado (a cute little encore-style piece). For grad school auditions, I'll use the Bach from my recital, but in addition there's the first two movements of the Elgar Concerto, a Popper Etude (No. 22), Martinu's Variations on a Theme by Rossini, Beethoven's A Major Sonata, and orchestral excerpts from Beethoven 5, Brahms Piano Concerto, Strauss Ein Heldenleben and Mendelssohn Midsummer Night's Dream. Then for my senior recital in April, I think I'll use the Beethoven Sonata, but I have to learn Schelomo, a Hebraic Rhapsody by Bloch, as my concerto. In addition, I'm going to try to keep up with my Music History reading for this unit, because cramming just really doesn't work when there's this much material to learn.
Alright, time to sit in the laundromat with textbooks. And this is what I call a weekend...
