Bad Compositional Ideas

These are real, and they're really on my worktable.

The fantasy on "Simple Gifts" is proving to be just exactly as boring as the traditional "Simple Gifts". However, I must finish it, because there are three quarters of a student string quartet waiting to play it with me in April. (Two of them just don't know it yet.)

The music-theater-spoof setting of Frank O'Hara's "Wouldn't it be funny (if the Finger had designed us all to shit just once a week)" is truly not worth the crap it's written about, and is impossible to make cool. I'll table it and try again when my honky-tonk chops are better. Yeah, right.

There is absolutely no point in notating a jig, a reel, or a strathspey past the stage of 'lead-sheet.' Which means there's also no way to utilize these forms in an art-music context, unless they're part of some other fully-composed work. Too bad for my Ceilidh Suite.

I'm also beginning to have second thoughts about the Piano/Banjo Tango.

That is all.
