I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make volume 36 all about my slash goggles. It's just…as disappointed as I am that Kalifa would betray Iceberg, I was devastated that Rob Lucci and Paulie weren't flyting friends. Rob Lucci, I wish you were being mind-controlled by an evil pigeon.
I'm enjoying your reactions, because honestly I feel like my slash goggles are broken when I'm watching One Piece. Kind of like I could never see Ace/Smoker until others pointed it out.
Also, you can help me understand why fandom is in love with Rob Lucci. Not that I don't love the pigeon thing, but obviously I am too obsessed with Kaku.
ROB! You used to be a pigeon-ventriloquist. You used to be awesome. I hope the mouse kills you first.
I WISH the mouse would kill Lucci. Mouse justice!
I love this whole scene because I love the scholar-adventurer who possesses arcane knowledge. OMG, we need more characters like that.
YES. This arc is obviously Robin-centric (as well as Usopp-centric), and I'm looking forward to your reactions to... things.
A liiiiitle ironic, considering what he was planning to do to Robin.
Good point! I think on some level he understands that himself, but his fear of the weapon overrides everything else, I guess. The next volume makes his reasons for that a little clearer.
Very glad you have 37-38! (Do you have a request out on the later volumes? This arc, like Alabasta, starts to have a lot of bad cliffhangers - 38 is one. If you can get your hands on volumes up through 46, you might want to have them in reserve.) I have a starter draft of 37, 38 will take a little longer, but I won't rush it. Enjoy your Amazon Japan order!

Same! Honestly not even just slash; I barely see any romance at all (or want it, really?). It's kind of weird considering my normal reading/watching habits.

"Mouse justice" is going to be my new battle cry. XD (e.g. "I wish somebody would kill [super annoying character]. For mouse justice!")
you can help me understand why fandom is in love with Rob Lucci.
Well, I can't tell you why fandom loves him (present tense), because I am so over him, but I loved him in volume 35 (and up until he revealed himself as an Iceberg-kicking jerk) because he chastised Paulie for trying to steal the Strawhats' money and because he talked through a pigeon. The first thing made me think he was the opposite kind of person than the person he turned out to be. (Though I guess one could argue that punishing Paulie in v.35 was also "justice." I just thought it was good friendship. Like, not letting your friends get away with doing jerkface stuff.)

Darn. This gets tricky. Once I check out a book, I'm only guaranteed 3 weeks with it, and I only get one 3-week renewal on top of that if no one places a hold on the book. And I want the volumes in hand while we discuss. So reading through everything now would probably make me less participatory later. Manga continues to be hard.

Oh, wow, great point on both counts, that it makes him seem to be something he's not - a decent, kind friend - and yet is entirely in keeping with his true character - the ruthless executor of justice.
Come to think of it, we're led to think that most of the CP-9 figures are paragons of virtue, whereas Paulie seems like the slacker of the bunch, what with the gambling and the debts and the almost-stealing. But Paulie turns out to be the most honorable of the lot.
Re: library books: I can see why you don't want to read ahead of the discussion. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that you are able to continue getting the books you want when you want them.

Iceberg clearly thinks so. Do we later learn that he suspected Kaku and Lucci of being spies, or was it just good judgment that he picked Paulie for the blueprint maneuver?

Me, too. And I thank you for the cliffhanger warning, because I was going to steam ahead with vols 37-38 this weekend. Now I'll wait a bit. I'll be sad to send 34-36 back to the library, but I don't want to hoard.

I actually don't recall this coming up, although I could be forgetting something. Perhaps it was just instinct on Iceberg's part.
Now I'll wait a bit.
I think you could maybe read 37 (it does have a cliffhanger, but not as bad), but I really don't think you want to get to the end of 38 and not have 39 in hand.
Or at least, if you succumb to temptation, don't read the last chapter of 38 until you have 39. That much should be safe.
Followup on cliffhangers: I just went and checked all the later volumes in the arc. I'm thankful to report that of all the (other) really dramatic moments I remembered, none are interrupted by a volume ending. There are a lot of "fighting drama" cliffhangers, but I didn't see anything else that made me want to scream "How could you end the volume THERE!?"
The two worst splits are 38/39 and, oddly, 45/46, which is so post-Enies-Lobby that it's not Enies Lobby at all. (Yeah, I know it sounds like that makes no sense.)
Well, and 40/41 is just a LITTLE cruel. But you really want 41, anyway.

YMMV, of course!
