One Piece Vol 24

Running late because I had company over the weekend.

Moving into the Skypiea arc by way of Jaya. I thought I remembered vol 24 being kind of boring, but a lot more happens here than I thought.

Yontouryu has got to be one of my favourite Luffy lines ever, and it's only better for Usopp and his ongoing, futile attempts to make his captain make sense. XD (Zoro could only dream of figuring out a way to hold yet another sword.) This whole episode is some of One Piece at its best - important plot and character reactions in the wake of a major arc, and side-splittingly funny at the same time. The crew's reactions to losing Vivi plus Robin's appearance right afterwards had me semi-seriously declaring Zoro "The one Straw Hat who's just not into women at all." [Post Skypeia]All jokes aside though, I love that despite being the last member Robin couldn't win over, Zoro's the first to step up to her defence when Aokiji shows up just before Water 7. Whatever doubts he might have still had about her, she was nakama by then, and her place on the crew was no-one else's business. :3

[Punk Hazard]Good point on the similarity between Doflamingo's and Law's symbols - I never spotted that before. It's not so close that it's obvious they've got to be related, but in retrospect it looks an awful lot like our first hint that there might be some shared history.

On Blackbeard, I'd completely forgotten about the 'those guys' line, but looking back on it now in the context of more recent events and fannish speculation... [Marineford]I have to wonder if it's some sort of reference to Blackbeard's 'unique body type', the three skulls on his Jolly Roger and how he's able to use multiple Devil Fruit abilities. A reference to him having nakama around town seems way too simple for such a significant line.

Also looking back on this in retrospect, I do love how subtle Blackbeard's introduction is. When he first shows up you really have no idea where Oda's going with this guy.
