Good day. Loads of food. Several episodes of the L word season three (I know I'm behind on that, but I've seen season four, so then I'll have to see season three before I start watching season five, which is currently airing in Norway, right?).
My mother just told me that her mother, my grandmother, used to be engaged to my father's uncle, Adolf. But Adolf helped the jews escape to Sweden during world war II, and the nazis captured him and tortured him and he died. (Adolf would probably not be a good name after the war anyway). So when my mother met my father, someone from the same family as the fiance she lost some 35 years earlier, she got mad at my mother, probably because it brought up old memories. My mom says she's never talked about it.
My poor grandmother, all her ten older siblings moved out to work and get married, but as the youngest, she was expected to stay at home to take care of her father because her mother was dead. He wasn't sick or anything, he was just a man. And men in the fifties obviously couldn't live without a woman (or girl, she was 15 when her mother died) to take care of them. In addition, my 15 year old grandmother had to raise her sister's 5 year old daughter outside marriage, because the sister's new husband didn't like the child that wasn't his.
It's really incredible to think of how much has changed the past 40-50 years, at least in this part of the world. How different everything is. How glad I am I'm born i 1988 and not 1938.
