Don't you just hate it when people say to you "let's get together sometime," or "you should stop by sometime"? Or maybe you like it, I don't know. But I don't. Now I am guilty of it myself but ever since I came to this realization I have made a conscious effort to stop saying that to people I care about. When acquaintances or people you bump into say it, you know they are trying to be polite and blow you off. Sorta. But when good friends say it, I know they are not trying to blow you off; they are just very noncommittal. So what's the deal?
I much prefer "anytime" to "sometime." For example, tell me to stop by anytime, which sounds more like an open invitation and not a half-hearted way of reaching out to me. Now with people you date, or start dating, it's a whole different ballgame. Because then you have all these boundaries, and you don't want to appear too available so you try to sound nonchalant. Ahh the complexities of dating. Ugh.
