Cassie’s face was turned towards the heavens, the mascara running down her face as the rain pelted her skin. Her clothes were soaked through and she looked as if she’d gone swimming. His arms slid around her, and she could feel his body warmth against her back as he gave her a gentle squeeze and then stepped back.

“Cass, we’ve got to go. We don’t want them to find us” his words were soft, and when Cassie turned, she could see that he was soaked thoroughly as well. With a nod she grasped his hand and allowed Wilis to lead her towards the car. Cassie couldn’t help but think it was her fault, she’d left the company and now they were out to make her pay for it. Without a word she slid into the car, the heat blasting from the vents doing nothing to warm her.

“Wilis…I’m so sorry” she whispered sadly into the whirring sound of the heat as Wilis turned the key in the ignition and started them forward. They were going onto a long stretch of highway; she’d politely asked him to stop at the rest area only a few minutes ago. But they needed to keep moving, or they’d end up in the hands of them. The seats of the Yukon were fake leather and refused to be a sponge for the water that was slowly dripping its way to the floor.

“Cass, stop blaming yourself …”he started, the same words he’d said time and time again. It was a lie, it not being her fault.
