first things first: i have crossed over and joined the category of people known as cookie dunkers. it is quite a delicious lifestyle.
so last thursday i got up dark and early to play "sleigh ride" with sara kiridly for kalabza, so we could play in the concert that night. i conveniently suggested that i help out by playing the third part because while my tongue is just the same, my lips just can't hit those high Es anymore. i felt like someone who's already past her prime and it really motivated me, more than keith's persuasion, to break out the clarinet at school next year. i spent the rest of the high school day with nick, visiting every single teacher i wanted to see. i felt awful because mr. kelly was having an awful day, and he just wasn't himself. he doesn't deserve any of the grief he's getting.
i got all dolled up that evening for the concert and hit the diner afterward with a bunch of people, including the long-lost ashley! lovely.
friday i traveled to west to attend mr. sill's holiday comedy routine-thing, which was pretty hilarious, since i've never had him and therefore never seen any of it before. i also got to hug victoria, something i've been wanting to do for months, and witness first-hand joe mcgrann's teaching of a physics class before heading to lunch with some family.
i saw "juno" with my sister and cousin! it was quirky and had way too much slang, but it was pretty wonderful. i especially loved the sentiment that you should be with someone who basically thinks you're the best, no matter what. it sounded greedy and conceited when i first heard it, but the more i think about it, the more true it sounds.
that night, i had people over, and the best part was probably when it was just alison, mike, nick, and joe left standing in my kitchen, and i had to demonstrate how to use my rolling dishwasher (you have to plug it in, hook it up to the sink, and move it when you want to use the oven. is it that weird? i guess so). that, or when we were discussing that cat in a rhode island nursing home, the one that somehow always walks into the rooms of patients who are about to die, and joe suggested, "i bet the cat just hits the plug out."
there is an ugly, tall, scraggly tree in my living room, draped with bubble lights and too many ornaments. i love it. (i also love alan rickman. and snape. they're "both" onscreen right now.)
saturday night was jill's, which was even more amusing than usual, and the visit to my aunt's place on sunday afternoon turned into a political discussion as always. that night, my family and i had a much-needed christmas movie marathon, including "a charlie brown christmas" and "muppet family christmas".
and then it was christmas eve! i woke up bright and early to go on a spontaneous and very successful mr. cheapo's run with the scrooge in my life, followed by a less successful guitar "lesson". before i knew it (and this happens every christmas eve) it was already time for church and then the party at my aunt and cousins' house! man, i love christmas eve more than anything. santa was good to me the next morning, and while still in my traditional red-and-white-polka-dot pajamas, my mom and sister and i visited my grandma and aunt and cousins, only to see them a couple hours later at the party. the party was dominated by 1) apples to apples--we got a thirteen person game going, and 2) guitar hero III, which approximately 75% of my family got in on at various points in the party. for a while it was just my two aunts playing in the den alone, and after that my cousin got a photo of them gleefully posing with the guitar controllers. right before he snapped the picture, my aunt, mary, said cheerfully, "i wanna be on 'the facebook'!"
on a more random closing note, it's kinda creepy being downstairs alone; i'd forgotten. when i was younger i used to be afraid that one day i'd smell a fart while i was home alone, and that's how i'd know a robber/murderer was in the room with me.
