brainstorming and chimneys

1. "disturbia" is scarier than any other movie i've seen.  (oh wow.  just when i was typing that, i realized that "disturbia" is like "suburbia", aka the reason they titled it.)  so the nyu movie channel plays about six new-ish and old movies a month throughout every day, and one of the ones that keeps playing throughout september is "disturbia".  i had only seen about five minutes of it, though, until last night, when i sat down at 11 pm with my orange juice and a few of my suitemates to watch it from the beginning.  oh man, was it scary.  it wasn't even gory, just terrifyingly suspenseful.  helene and i, who hadn't seen it before, kept gasping and squealing, and i almost had to leave the room at one point because i just couldn't take it anymore.  kate had already seen it, but she admitted that she was freaked out, too, and hamna merely laughed at us all and did an organic chem lab.
2. sleeping is better than being on tv.  today i woke up at 10:30 to u2's "beautiful day", which is my ringtone, because my friend alex was texting me.  she's involved with the school newspaper/tv station, and was letting me know that their little film crew was outside my dorm, taping stuff about the "residential college" dorm i am in, in case i wanted to come down and be in the segment.  but i was in pajamas and had bad breath and greasy hair.  oh well.
3. "sex and the city" is better than interviews.  i trudged up to campus in the early afternoon for an interview with the peer health exchange (that's that organization where i would teach a health topic at nyc public high schools) at the student center.  they had said it would be really short and informal, so i wasn't nervous, but when i got there, i was assaulted with the sight of two groups of student interviewers, armed with clipboards.  luckily, i got the group that was only two people interviewing me, and luckily it went pretty well, but i was stumped at this question: "if there was a kid in the class who was being really disruptive, and asking totally irrelevant questions, and just...yeah, being really disruptive, what would you do?"  good question.  i bought time by asking them a question and then answered really lamely.  once i stood up, though, they asked, "oh, and it said on your application that you heard about this through a friend; which friend?" this was true; the same day i had signed up at the club fair, i met this sophomore, kelly, while on line for the mystery concert, and she had told me all about the program.  so i jumped at the chance to use nepotism and said, "kelly sie--" and one of the interviewers in the other group exclaimed, "kelly's my roommate!  wait, what's your name?" when i told her, she said, "oh, you're sara bradshaw?!  yeah, she talked about you!"  and then we joked about my name being like carrie bradshaw's.  so i think that part of the "interview" went well.
4. brainstorming/wandering is better than reading. i had been reading the odyssey and joe hill in the park for about fifteen minutes when i realized that i didn't want to be doing that, even though it was beautiful outside.  i would rather be at the metropolitan museum of art, wandering/researching for the children's story contest for college students that they are having.  so i did that.  i also made the elevator trip up to the roof sculpture garden, since i missed my chance a couple of weeks ago.  there, i sipped lemonade as i gazed at the spectacular view of central park's trees and uptown's skyscrapers.  i love the city, i really do.
5. lauren smith is better than britney spears.  and a lot of other people.  outside the museum, i called mike since his computer is broken and i hadn't heard from him in forever, and then i took the 6 train downtown to brooklyn to meet up with tim and his friends.  one of his friends is an aspiring singer-songwriter of sorts, and she was performing at the perch bar and cafe, so we all went, and it was great.  honestly, she was incredible--the lyrics, the music itself, her voice, guitar-playing--it was all so real and impressive.  if you want some mellow music, look up lauren smith; she'll be famous soon.  i felt so out of place in the venue, though; it was so quintessentially "hip".
6. the roof of 93 fifth avenue, brooklyn is better than the roof of the met.  perch was down the street from tim's apartment, so he, ben, tim's roommate annette, and i went back there to hang out after the show.  they were all pretty tired, so there were a lot of awkward silences and dull conversations, until tim mentioned the roof and i was like, "you can go up to your roof?" "yeah!" he replied, "you wanna go up there?" "yes," i said, so definitively that i surprised even myself, and with that, the four of us climbed the short but terrifying ladder up to their roof.  ben and tim had to help me get up because i am so deathly afraid of heights, but it was well worth it.  it wasn't a real, "finished" roof where you could have a party or something, it was just a wide expanse of gray and a few chimneys, but standing on it made me feel like i was on top of the world.  annette brought up a blanket, so we all laid down and looked at the night sky and talked in a much livelier way.  the brooklyn sky was wide and tinged at the edges with white from all the light pollution.  when we got cold, ben went to his girlfriend's house, and i left for my dorm.
7. inspiration is better than sex.  well, fine, i guess i don't really know that.  but for the moment, i don't even care that much that the guy i want to have sex with is probably having sex with someone else right now, because i think i'm going to go write some of this museum short story.  and maybe tomorrow i'll go home, because i kind of feel like it, and because i can always hang out with alex and her hallmates next week instead of tomorrow.  good night.
