This is me being crabby, a crabby that's been building for a while. Exhausted, wrung out, beaten down and generally out of sorts. (insert melodramatic pose here) But instead of my rambling, which would surely end up nowhere productive, have another song.
The lead singer/songwriter of the Weakerthans, John K. Samson, released his solo album a few weeks ago. It was the first record in a long time that I'd really, really been looking forward to, and it didn't disappoint. Lyrically it's wonderful, and some of his melodies are just as beautifully simple as always. I know he's not from here, and I know he's not singing about here, but so many of his images and ideas and melodies so often make me feel as though he could be. His music has just always made sense to me.
Right now, there are times when all I want is this song on repeat. So go listen to it. ... I'm gonna go hug my hippo.
"While rain and thunder drop and roll,
Then stop short of a storm
Leave the air stuck with this waiting to be born.
As I stand before an unresponsive automatic door,
Just another door that won't open for me anymore....
There's a billboard by the highway
That says 'Welcome to'
'Bienvenue'
But no sign to show you when you go away."
