New Torchwood! I'm actually feeling optimistic about it now, exactly the opposite of what I felt when Fox was looking at it. I'm still wary of what disasters RTD might cause, especially since it sounds like they're still hoping to make the new series more like COE than like seasons 1 and 2, but I'm willing to cross my fingers and hope for the best. So here's what I'd like to see in season 4:
*Gwen stuck in Cardiff while Jack is gallivanting around the world. I do like the promise of global stories, but I don't want it to lose the Welshness either. And there are good practical reasons for keeping Gwen in Cardiff, while there are good emotional reasons why Jack might find it too painful to spend much time there.
*Rhys as a regular series regular, not just an occasional guest star or walk-on. Rhys is adorable and we must have more of him.
*Better continuity and incorporation of the rest of the Whoniverse, including acknowledgment of global crises that have happened in the past (regardless of which show they happened on). At the very least, it needs to be set in a world where the events of "Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" and COE are remembered and public attitudes have shifted accordingly.
*Martha, Mickey, and the return of Harriet Jones. Don't expect this to happen, but it sure would be nice, and in Martha and Mickey's case, would make more logical sense than not having them around. Others I'd like to see? Our timeline's now-older version of Jake and Diana from the Van Statten episode (tell me that woman wasn't a Torchwood agent). Someone I don't want to see? Alonso. Sorry, but I find him supremely boring.
*A cast that's really international, and not just Welsh/British/American. And where the non-whitebread characters aren't just token stereotypes.
*A return to the mostly episodic nature of seasons 1 and 2, with all their humor, sex-positive and LGBT-positive ambiance, beautiful and unique set, and balance between the techy, action, and human elements of the plot.
*A running joke around the fact that's Jack's passed himself off as American for decades but has spent a lot more time in Wales than he has America.
*More flashbacks! To both Jack's and Torchwood's history. If Tosh, Ianto, and Alex can appear in some of them, all the better, but I'll be glad to see any flashbacks.
*More information about Torchwood's history as a global organization (it's perfectly believable that they kept small outposts in all the former colonies) and the administrative/legal context in which they operated before Canary Wharf and how that had to change afterward. I want to see them building a new global organization from the remnants of the old one, not ignoring all the history that has gone before.
