This is, by far, my favourite episode of the fifth season thus far.
First things first, BILL NIGHY. I think he's just spectacular and it was so nice to have him in this episode, even if it was in a relatively minor role. That said, I have a question to ask: do all of you call him Van Go[ff]? Because everyone I've ever known has always pronounced it with the "gh" being silent, so it sounds like Van Go. Just curious.
Speaking of Van Gogh, love, love, LOVE the guy who played him - spectacular. He was just so perfectly cast and he executed the character brilliantly. I giggled when they met him at the cafe and Amy was like, dancing about with glee. She totally cracks me up XD
Then there was lots of plotty stuff occuring which I won't go into here so I'll skip ahead to after they smushed the alien. I'm a big fan of Van Gogh's
Starry Night and it was simply exquisite the way he explained how he saw the night sky to them as the shot of the stars blended and became the painting. LOVE.
My favourite bit though, would have to be the last 10-15. It was so reminscent of Nine when he met Charles Dickens (and told him truthfully that his books lasted forever) but at the same time it was so much better. I lolled over the TARDIS being papered with circus posters (and them getting burned off in the vortex XD) and Vincent's reaction to the inside XD and then they landed and headed into the Musée d'Orsay and ohgodhisreaction to the paintings. And then the Doctor gets Bill Nighy back in on the action to talk about Vincent's work and he's just standing there crying, completely overwhelmed with happiness that his work is loved and appreciated so much so long after he's gone. It was just so beautiful - I was crying my eyes out all the way through that scene. FIRST time the new series has made me properly cry.
THEN they pull the emotion right back again and make me lirl over Vincent's horror that one of his paintings of the haystacks made it into the gallery XD too funny. And then they make me all sad again when Amy's all excited about him making new paintings and then realising that he didn't - the final ray of hope being that he dedicated "Sunflowers" to her! Major aw from me there. What a cute way to wrap up the episode!
So in short, I kinda maybe sorta loved this episode a lot. Such a beautiful underlying theme of hope and love and just...eeeeee. It was awesome and I loved it ^_^
