We Are Dancers
(for Kerryl)

We are a family, a sisterhood
We are young, we are old,
we are in-between
We are grandmothers and
mothers and daughters
We are three generations
all brought together into one

We are the girls who wear stockings,
fifty pairs of shoes, twenty million hair pins
and industrial strength hair spray
We are the girls who wear fake tan in winter,
false eyelashes in broad daylight

We are jewellers and sewers,
artists and painters
We are glitterer’s and sequiner’s
and milliner’s extraordinaire!

We are furniture removalists
and couriers and scavengers
We are tea and coffee guzzlers,
we are cake and slice munchers
We are the loud bunch in the
corner of the restaurant
We are music editors
and choreographers
We are perfectionists
and (sometimes) insomniacs
We are creative, we are disciplined

We are the music, the rhythm, the beat
We are performers, we are athletes
We are the struggle and the ease,
the long rehearsals, the aching muscles

We are hours upon hours
spent waiting in dressing rooms
We are centre stage and backstage,
upstage and downstage,
we are biting our nails in the wings

We are the wins and the losses,
the shared joy and heartbreak
We are teacher and student,
friend and mentor, all at once

We are anything and everything that we need - or want - to be

We are dancers
