Today marks the anniversary of the canon death of Charlie Pace on Lost. Being the terribly fangirly fangirl that I am, I’ve been working on a little rather large project for a while now, being sort of a musical tribute to my favourite ex-rock star. And by that I mean I’ve made a 40 song fanmix with every song (except one cus its an instrumental and I’m lazy) having it’s own graphic. There are links to downloads for every song as well as youtube links (for all but two) so you can listen to the songs first if you’d prefer before you kill your download limits. If anyone wants a zip of all the files and album art, just poke me and I’ll add it to the list k?
(And before anyone tries to point this out to me - yes I know that I’m incredibly obsessive. It’s because I’m a Virgo =P)
I dedicate this fanmix to the wonderful shippers on
charlie_claire, the Charlie lovers (and livers) on
charlielives and also to my writing buddies (you know who you are) because I know you love Charlie just as much as I do and I know we’re all coming to the end of our tether when it comes to inspiration. Thank you to everyone who recommended songs to me (or made fanvideos that I stole songs from because they were too awesome for words). Not all the songs I got recced have been put on here (I had to stop somewhere!) but rest assured that I downloaded and listened to all of your suggestions and they were all awesome so thank you!
Anyway. I hope you guys all like this - I’ve been stressing out about finishing it all bloody day! So without further ado...
Title: Greatest Hits: A Charlie Pace Tribute
Fandom: Lost
Characters/Pairings: Charlie Pace
Notes/Warnings: massive, lots of random songs and the artwork may kill dialip connections.
01. The Beatles - Let It Be [
Listen] [
Download]
“It’s a fine line between denial and faith - it’s much better on my side.”
A beautiful song that you should already own if you’re any kind of music buff. Charlie’s faith was an overlying theme throughout his life. As a child/young adult he was involved heavily with his Church but even after DriveShaft took off and he left many of his previous values behind him, he still returned again and again to his faith to see him through hard times.
02. Bad Company - Shooting Star [
Listen] [
Download]“You are bloody DriveShaft!”
Charlie may not have wanted to be a rock star at first but his love of music from an early age led him down the path to rock and roll.
03. The Kinks - He’s Evil [
Listen][
Download]
“Last night I had physical relations with a girl that I didn’t even know. Right after that I had…relations with another girl. And after that I watched while they…had relations with each other.”
The first temptations of being a rock star - the sex! And trying to get it in any way you can =P
04. Radiohead - High and Dry[
Listen] [
Download]
“Liam, you’re killing yourself with this stuff!”
Liam’s drug addiction and lust for fame tore apart the band (and his relationship with his brother) from the inside out.
05. Jimmy Eat World - Drugs Or Me [
Listen] [
Download]
“Face it - if you’re not in this band what the bloody hell use are you?”
In a moment of despair over his brother’s callous treatment, Charlie turns to drug to try and numb himself.
06. Portishead - Numb [
Listen] [
Download]
“So I’m asking you - as a brother. The way you asked me...”
The time between when Liam moved to Australia and when Charlie finally followed him, begging him to rejoin the band. Charlie spent this time in a limbo of sorts, trying desperately to get his life back on track and get off the drugs but failing every time.
07. Placebo - Broken Promise [
Listen] [
Download]
“You never looked out for me!”
Charlie finally confronts Liam, bitterly blaming him for his addiction and the way his life has turned out.
08. Gavin DeGraw - Get Lost [
Download]
“Guys...where are we?”
...And then his plane crashes on the island.
09. Kaitlyn - Friend [
Listen][
Download]
“No, I’m glad you came Charlie.”
Always searching for validation, Charlie made friends with almost all of his fellow castaways: Sayid, Claire, Kate, Jack, Locke...
10. Staind - It’s Been a While [
Listen] [
Download]
“You think I’m useless and a junkie to boot.”
With rescue seeming less and less likely every day, Charlie goes through a gruelling withdrawal on the island with Locke’s help.
11. Missy Higgins -Steer [
Listen] [
Download]
“I’m proud of you Charlie. I always knew you could do it.”
The aftermath of the withdrawal - and the promise of a bright shiny new world without the drugs.
12. Unwritten Law - Cailin [
Listen] [
Download]
“I worry about you out here. It’s very...sunny.”
And then Charlie met Claire...
13. Carole King - You’ve Got A Friend [
Listen] [
Download]
“And I think...we could be friends. I could be your friend.”
Charlie tries to get closer to Claire but...well she doesn’t want a bar of it because she has issues. But that’s cool cause Charlie still likes her anyway and he promises to take care of her and babbles about his drug addiction and is generally adorable.
14. Placebo - Haemoglobin [
Listen] [
Download]
“I didn’t see anything. Hear anything. Claire. That’s all they wanted. All they wanted was Claire.”
Ethan’s abduction. Also known as the day when all the Charlie fangirl’s hearts first stopped in fear - and it certainly wasn’t the last.
15. The Blind Boys of Alabama - I Shall Not Walk Alone [
Listen] [
Download]
“You did everything that you could. And you came close to dying yourself.”
“Yeah maybe I should’ve died.”
In Claire’s absence Charlie gets depressed but he gets shaken out of his funk by Rose. Together they pray, reaffirming his faith.
16. Evanescence - Taking Over Me [
Listen] [
Download]
“We’re friends?”
“Yeah. Yeah we’re friends.”
Claire returns to camp and at first Charlie thinks his prayers have been answered until it is revealed that she doesn’t remember anything since the crash. He works at reforging their relationship from scratch but can’t help but overstep his boundaries.
17. Creed - My Sacrifice [
Listen] [
Download]
“You wanna take that walk now?”
After Charlie kills Ethan he isolates himself from the group but then with some prompting from Sayid he realises that he needs to talk to somebody about what happened and he can’t just keep on ignoring Claire. So they go for a walk.
18. Seal - Kiss From A Rose [
Listen] [
Download]
“No-one is gonna take this baby away from you.”
Claire gives birth and Charlie steps up readily to be a father figure for the little guy - taking care of him and then rescuing him from Rousseau.
19. The Whitlams - I Don’t Believe Anymore [
Listen] [
Download]“You know it’s like we’re playing mum and dad to this baby yet I don’t remember marrying him.”
Charlie begins to accidentally overstep his boundaries - and Claire begins to feel resentful towards him. This all comes to a head when Claire discovers the Virgin Mary statues full of Heroin and kicks him out.
20. Billy Joel - She’s Always A Woman [
Listen] [
Download]
“Do you think Claire’s missed me yet?”
The day after Claire has kicked him out, Charlie is appalled to see that she’s hanging out with Locke - seemingly having replaced him already.
21. Reliant K - Be My Escape [
Listen] [
Download]
“I have to do this. I need to.”
Charlie’s nightmares about Aaron lead him to a confrontation with Claire that...doesn’t end in his favour.
22. James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover [
Listen] [
Download]
“I know what this looks like - what people think. It doesn’t matter now, but I didn’t use. I wanted to. I really wanted to. But I didn’t.”
Cliché song - I know. But seriously? LYRICS. PERFECT.
23. Pete Murray - Better Days [
Listen] [
Download]
Another in between time - after his initial depression Charlie begins working on the church with Eko, the kitchen with Sayid, and he begins to go on hikes again. Basically he beings to move on from Claire and give her space.
24. Forty Foot Echo - Brand New Day [
Listen] [
Download]
“Do you think maybe you and I could…um…”
After finding the case of vaccine, Charlie tries to make amends with Claire by giving it to her. She is flattered by the gesture and the C/C shippers rejoiced.
25. Linkin Park - What I’ve Done [
Listen] [
Download]
Charlie finally let’s go of the statues that he’s been coveting for weeks, throwing them all in the sea on his own stead and seeking his own redemption.
26. Feeder - Tender [
Listen] [
Download]
And after the hatch implosion, thus begins the healing process between Charlie and Claire.
27. Oasis - Wonderwall [
Listen] [
Download]
“The universe has a way of course correcting...and I can’t stop it forever. No matter what I try to do...you’re gonna die brother.”
And then just when things start to look good some crazy Scottish man comes out of nowhere and starts predicting his death. Poor Charlie.
28. The New Radicals - Get What You Give [
Listen] [
Download]
“I came to ride shotgun.”
This time it’s Hurley who snaps Charlie out of his little death-funk. They achieve this by doing wheelie’s in a beat up old VW bus. As you do.
29. The Fray - Look After You [
Listen] [
Download]
“You know I’m not giving up on you either Charlie. We’ll get through this together.”
Instead of running away from him and generally freaking out, Claire FINALLY tells Charlie that she’s going to look after him and that they’ll face Desmond’s death prophecies together. And all the shippers squeed.
30. John Denver - This Old Guitar[
Listen] [
Download]
“It was about the music!”
A moment that wasn’t covered in the show (but should’ve been) was the brutal death of Charlie’s beloved guitar (whom I have nicknamed Ethel). So here’s your Catch-22 song people, a lament for poor broken Ethel.
31. Linkin Park - Leave out all the Rest [
Listen] [
Download]
“While I’m gone...don’t worry about me.”
Desmond informs Charlie of the final prophecy and Charlie decides to write out a list of his Greatest Hits for Desmond to give to Claire after he’s gone.
32. Yellowcard - How I Go [
Listen] [
Download]
“Take care of your mum while I’m away. I love you.”
“See you soon.”
“Catch up with you later. Just remember that I love you man.”
Charlie says his goodbyes to Aaron, Claire and Hurley. And makes everybody watching bawl their eyes out while he’s at it.
33. Staind - So Far Away [
Listen] [
Download]
“#1 the night I met you.”
Despite the over arching presence of his imminent death, Charlie still finds a moment to regret the shortness and shallowness of his life but acknowledges that he did some worthwhile things as well, and he’s proud of who he’s become.
34. Andy Williams - The Impossible Dream [
Listen] [
Download]
“You and I both know - you’re not supposed to take my place brother.”
The greatest act of heroism to date on Lost - one man walking (or rather, swimming) steadfast to his own death to save the lives of the people that he loves. Well, he always was a determined little sod.
35. Stone Sour - Zzyzx Rd. [
Listen] [
Download]
“But if this station floods...what happens to you?”
“I die.”
Unfortunately the Looking Glass isn’t empty and Charlie has to try and convince Bonnie and Greta that he’s definitely going to turn off the jammer.
36. Blue October - Into the Ocean[
Listen] [
Download]
“So much for fate.”
The transmission to Penny and shutting the door. Yeah, not a whole lot about this scene that I can try and be cheerful about.
37. Jem - Missing You [
Listen] [
Download]
“What happened? How did he...?”
This song pretty much sums up the fan reaction as well as Claire/Hurley’s in 4x01 perfectly.
38. Neil Young - My My, Hey Hey [
Listen] [
Download]
“Charlie lives!”
This one’s actually an homage to the Charlie!lives fans - people who just couldn’t bear the thought of Charlie Pace not existing...so they created their own ways that he could have survived. Shame the writers couldn’t do the same. Btw I didn’t make this manip - I don't know who did.
39. John Rzeznik - I’m Still Here [
Listen] [
Download]
“I am dead. But I’m also here.”
Dbah!Charlie (dead-but-also-here Charlie) was the best thing in the whole of season four as far as I’m concerned. Whether he’s a ghost or some other phenomena has yet to be revealed but honestly? Who cares. He’s back from the dead (sort of), cooler and way hot.
BONUS: Michael Giacchino - Greatest Hits [
Download]
The theme from the end of Greatest Hits starting from Charlie’s final flashback with Claire through to the end of the episode.
