I feel like I'm reading a really interesting original novel, not because it is not Lost-like, but because the structure and details are so carefully laid out it feels like a separate piece of work. If I didn't know better, I would think this is a truly original idea of a man's struggle with rehab combined with a mysterious message. Don't take me the wrong way, it is original and an excellent fic. I just like how it can stand on its own.
I loved Charlie's interpretation of the 12 steps. That was so in character. I think his therapist is giving a pretty good analysis of his dreams. They do seem like nothing more than a projection of Charlie’s his hopes and dreams. The part where he remembers Ethan was really haunting. Of course Charlie had to take his peanut butter cravings to the extreme, which again could be so easily explained away by his addictive personality.
Are the Meghan interactions suppose to reflect his tenderness with Aaron?
The great thing about this fic I think is that it can stand on its own like you said. It's almost like a spinoff of the show really =P
Pretty much everything Charlie does in this parallels something on the island - whether he is aware of it or not. Which is why, at the beginning he's so confused as to whether or not he's just going crazy or if his dreams are just a by product of his heroin withdrawal or if it's all real and he's living out two seperate lives at the same time. The great thing is, because he doesn't know, the reader has no idea either!
Penny doesn't come in until quite a bit later but I think you'll be excited when she does =)

That's what appeals to me too. With this story you can include canon in a very abstract way that makes it seem fresh. I don't know about original though. Anyone who has read Stephen King's 'The Waste Lands' will spot this is very inspired by the Jake Chambers paradox story. But yeah, the writers took Charlie out of the show so we gave him his own show *smirks*
Yeah, Meghan tends to reflect Charlie's love for both Aaron and Claire as this fic goes on. It's still a while yet until Penny shows up but she is pivotal when she does appear.
Step 1) admit to yourself that you are worthless bloody scum; Step 2) admit to everyone else that you are worthless bloody scum; and, Step 3) devote your life to making amends for being worthless bloody scum.
I got around to re-reading this chapter late last night. I love your parts, sapph! The peanut butter stuff was adorable and did a great job of lightening the tone for a bit before - the hanging dream!! It was just terrifying the way you described that, amazing use of language *shudders*
The Liam/Charlie scene that follows was very affectionate and genuine. I loved the Charlie dream diary part especially the line about having contractions (her, not me). Very funny.
I did my best to work in as many points in Charlie's dream diary as I could without being overlong so I'm glad it worked out well.
I don't think I ever told you but every time I read through your therapy bit I'm just like "manm, no wonder Charlie's confused!" his therapists interpretation of his dreams are just so believable. And Charlie's interpretation of the 12 steps always makes me lol XP
