written blue on white it's plain to see

I stole this idea from falafel_fiction who listed her top ten fanfictions that she herself has written. When I posted my 100th Lost fanfiction, I listed a few of my favourites here but as far as all time favourites, regardless of genre etc. go - these are it.

I tried for ten but I really couldn't cut some of these off so... I've ended up with my top twelve. Considering I've posted 121 Lost fanfictions to date (and in a way, they're all my favourites) I'm sure you'll all forgive me.

12. Relief
My 11th fanfiction was a cheeky little ficlet that drove everyone utterly MAD when I posted it because I got them all thinking dirty when really, the content was anything but. This one still makes me smile, even now.

11. The Man In The Mirror
Charlie (and Dom) always seem to get bagged for not being conventionally good looking - and apparently that’s part of the reason why Jack and Sawyer haven’t died yet which I personally think is STUPID. This fic stemmed from my frustration at the shallowness of this world and played out through a character who is deeply flawed both inside and out who discovers that he actually quite likes who he is, even if he is imperfect.

10. The World Is Quiet Here
The idea of Charlie and Christian meeting in the afterlife just tickles me pink and this fic actually turned out better than I’d expected it to. I love that Charlie finds out that Claire and Jack are siblings in this and that even though he’s died before his time Charlie has gone somewhere peaceful and he’s not alone.

09. Here and Now
I had a lot of fun with the juxtaposition between the first and second parts of this. I’ve always loved how Charlie can swing from one emotion to another so quickly - its part of what I love about him. It was also nice to put some Charlie/Claire interaction into “Tricia Tanaka” as I believe it was truly, truly lacking.

08. Past, Present & Future
Okay so this was co-authored with pacejunkiebut seriously - I go back and re-read this on a semi-regular basis simply because I enjoy reading it. I just…I love the premise of it and I love the fact that we got to give Charlie and Claire a happy ending. I feel like some of my best C/C scenes ever are in this fic, in the hospital. My heartfelt thanks to Pace who co-wrote this with me - this idea probably never would have come to fruition without you and you

07. Suicide Note
I wrote this in about two hours flat whilst listening to “Suicide Note” by Johnette Napolitano over and over again on a loop. It’s one of the few fics that I’ve written that got me choked up and teary as I wrote it - especially the last bit. It’s also one of the most unusual POV’s I’ve ever done. The use of an inanimate object to tell the story was partially filched from pacejunkie in tribute to her fic “Message In A Bottle” which was told from the POV of the bottle that the survivors put their messages in.

06. One Of Us Is A Hero
My favourite Ensemble fic. Never have I written so many characters in one go and been told that I’d nailed all of them. Kate’s segment remains my favourite out of all of them.

05. Victims of Fate
This idea all but exploded in my head when I read the prompt “you win”. It gave the words from the prompt such a strong meaning when put into this context - the final bit always makes me shiver a little bit. I was so utterly stoked when I won this challenge - fate might’ve won in Charlie’s case but the fact that this fic won over a bunch of fics starring characters from the show that are “more popular” than Charlie was just warms my heart.

04. Nameless Child
This is by far the darkest of my fics and I absolutely LOVE it. First I kill Claire, then Aaron dies from malnourishment and then I made Charlie commit suicide at the end by jumping off a freaking cliff. HOW EVIL AM I? I totally killed ALL aspects of my OTP in one fic. That said, I loved re-writing canon in this - especially having Charlie there when Shannon tried to shoot Locke. That scene was electric to write.

03. Charlie
This was the first Lost fanfiction that I ever wrote and to this day, it remains one of my all time favourites. It’s short, it’s sweet, it’s Charlie-centric, it’s set during season one (my favourite!), it has undertones of Charlie/Claire and just…I love the simplicity of the moment at the end, and the way I mapped out Charlie’s thoughts.

02. Confidence Man - The Time Between
This fic had a huge amount of thought behind it - the amount of planning I did for it was just insane and it’s certainly one of my favourite C/C fics in terms of banter and missing moments.

Basically the inspiration for this fic came when I was re-watching Confidence Man. Suddenly, I had an epiphany. I realised that between the first Charlie/Claire scene (where he brings her water) and the next (where they’re hanging out her washing) there’s a scene at the caves (the one where Jack punches Sawyer to try and get Shannon’s inhalers back) which is at night time. Therefore, shouldn’t that mean that Charlie spends not only a day but also a night on the beach with Claire? And then they hang out washing the following day? In any case, it made for an interesting fanfiction premise and so I wrote it.

On top of the crazy epiphany that inspired it, I also trawled through screencap after screencap to get an accurate idea of the layout of Claire’s beachside shelter so I could get the positioning of things correct. I even drew a map of it. I should really scan that in actually…if I can find it still!

All in all, definitely a huge sense of pride for its pre-writing stage and a massive favourite for it’s content as well ^_^

01. Dedicated To The One I Love
Being as this was my 100th fanfiction, I absolutely poured my heart and soul into it. I so wanted it to be something truly special and I really think that I achieved that. I also had a lot of fun using multiple forms of writing (in order: plain text, fragments of Claire’s diary, dialogue only, emails, the book cover, the letter from Desmond and the dedication written by Claire at the front of her book).

I also wrote it with a very clear idea from the inception of the idea, that as Claire was going to dedicate her book to Charlie, so too would I dedicate this fanfiction to him (and Dom) for inspiring me for so long. I’m now toying with the idea of writing an excerpt from “Anatomy of a Plane Crash” - not the whole thing because that would take flipping forever. What say you?
