I'm sorry this is long winded - but I had a lot to say - thank you for asking riot_grrl March 22 2006, 00:20:01 UTC
From research I've done on US based dog bites/fatalities, I've found there is an estimated population of 55 millions dogs in the United States. There are approximately 20 human deaths per year due to a dog attack.

Therefore, an infinitesimal percent (.0000004%) of the dog population is involved in a fatal attack.

Pit bulls if anything are DOG aggressive, and even this is something that can occur in ALL breeds of dog. Recently in my province two labs went haywire - got out of their home and mauled two Pomeranians - killing one of them, and then went after a pit bull puppy that was on it's lawn with it's family and severely injured it.

Dog aggression, or animal aggression does NOT equal human aggression - the two are separate.
A well bred, well socialized pit bull will NOT bite a human being, they would rather head butt them - and I have seen this proven by a gentleman I know who breeds Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

I have read of German Shepherds killing children.
I have read about huskies going right into a child's cradle, pulling out the baby and killing it.
I have read about a Pomeranian going onto a child in it's car seat and literally tearing off it's face.
I have also recently read about a Corgi biting a boy so severely in the face that his nose is broken - the irony here is the boy has lived in a home with pit bulls his whole life.

It's a HUGE mass media stereotype.
In the 80's they were looking to ban German Shepherds.
My mom and my vet were telling me that every other day there were articles about shepherd attacks - and how dangerous these dogs are and how they needed to be eliminated etc.
In the 90's Rotts and Dobermins were the dog of choice.
Now - it's pit bulls.

I can pretty much guarantee that if you saw a pit bull - you wouldn't be able to indentify it as being one - and I have proven THAT time and time again when I work with them at my shelter - people come up and ask what the beautiful dog is, or comment how cute the dog is - and are shocked that it's a pit bull.

I'll answer any questions that you have - I have no problem with that - but I can recommend that you do some reading:

Also, "are other breeds instinctively as lethal" - is ridiculous.
I have worked with HUNDREDS of pit bulls.
Have I ever been bit or intimidated?
No.

What have I been bit by?
Cocker Spaniels
Labs
Goldens
Shepherds
Jack Russels

One of my co-workers has 15 stitches in her forearm because of a Cocker Spaniel.

ALL dogs can bite.
ALL dogs can do damage and hurt someone.
ALL dogs can kill.

No one dog is "more lethal" than the other...and when people say things like that - I really wonder what happened to people thinking logically for themselves instead of beliving media hysteria.

I have had threats towards MY dog - who is not a pit bull, since all this hysteria has come forward...and he doesn't look like a pit bull at all.

That's him.
Yet I have been threatened by people, and told that my dog is one of "those killer dogs".

North America is going to follow suit of Italy - and ban 92 breeds if we're not careful and not more understanding of dog behaviour, and that dogs are ANIMALS and that they don't react to things the same way that we do.

Pit bulls are SO fantastic, and I really challenge anyone (if you were local I'd ask you to) to go out there, and meet with a local pit bull rescue and see how amazing and sweet and LOVING towards people these dogs are.

I also ask you to go to my journal - I will GLADLY share articles with you about the HORRORS that this breed endures from humans. Most recently a four month old puppy was dumped in acid by someone. Another rescue I know has recently had to put down a pit bull who was dosed in gasoline and set on fire...in my province there was a pit bull who was burned with cigarettes and it's eyes were super glued shut.
You would think that these dogs would be TERRIFIED of humans after enduring such TORTURE - and they weren't.
They still wagged, they still wanted love, they still struggled to try and be touched.

you'd know all the facts. You should hear my Dad rave about how Pit Bulls should be outlawed. I wasn't aware of the truth either, but I was more skeptical and cautious. A classmate of mine raises them and had to put up with a barrage of negative questions about them. Thank you for clarify the issue for me.

I've heard cockerspaniels are dumber than most dogs, is that true? Something about their being so inbred.

Your dog is cute. He looks alert and happy.

Cockerspaniels and labs are becoming so horribly inbred, that severe aggression is coming out in these breeds..
That's why pet stores should not be allowed to sell dogs at all, and that's also why backyard breeding shouldn't be allowed.

I have met some AMAZING cockers - but the majority - and I'm far from breedist - I love ALL dogs - have had SOME kind of severe temperment issue...
We have two on our street who have attacked me and my fiance several times, and who have attacked my own dog (my dog outweighs them by about 30 pounds and could seriously hurt them if he was given the chance...) but the owners do nothing - and the complaints I've filed have been ignored.

It's frustrating what those of us who have well behaved, well trained dogs have to go through because we choose to own a dog over 30 pounds - all because of the choices of a few.
