Pandora Hearts anime cast interview pt 1
I promised some Plurk friends a while back I'd translate this interview that was published in the Pandora Box Official Animation Guide -- it's got the main five actors from the anime (Minagawa Junko as Oz, Toriumi Kousuke as Gil, Kawasumi Ayako as Alice, Ishida Akira as Break, and Hanazawa Kana as Sharon) talking with creator Mochizuki. It's pretty interesting to see they all profess to be fans of the series and occasionally have some quite thoughtful insights.
This may be a slight bit paraphrased in parts, as I'm literally looking back and forth between the book and my computer screen as I translate, and I don't want to mess up the binding by holding it open for too long :[ It's a several page long interview, so I'll be doing it in a couple installments.
Pandora Hearts Tea Party!
July 2009 - The Pandora Hearts main cast sat down with series creator Mochizuki Jun for a modest tea party. Let us show you a bit of what they talked about ♥
Mochizuki Jun: Thank you for joining me today.
Kawasumi Ayako (Alice): Oh, it's a tea party.
MochiJun: I thought this would be a fun way to have a chat together.
Minagawa Junko (Oz): The dub recording will be over pretty soon, won't it... too bad...
Kawasumi: Yeah, we recorded episode 23 today, after all.
Minagawa: I really honestly love this place and this series, so it's sad for me that step by step we keep coming closer to the end. Before this post-recording talk, myself and Aya-chii and Toriumi-san were recording the Pandora Radio Special CD, so we've spent all day together... and in the taxi on the way here, we were all talking about how we wished there was a way to keep going, how we didn't want the series to end. We're all really regretful to be parting.
MochiJun: Yes, there's only two episodes left to record... what do you think about episodes 24 and 25?
Hanazawa Kana (Sharon): I'm really curious about what kind of anime-original story they're going to come up with.
Minagawa: Me too! Though you know, the original stuff started with today's recording!
Everyone: *laughter*
Minagawa: I wonder what will happen.
Hanazawa: I was very much looking forward to getting the next script from my manager.
Ishida Akira (Break): Yes, since in the original series, as it goes further along the story gets incredibly serious.
MochiJun: That's true. I suppose it gets pretty heavy.
Ishida: And the more serious it gets... the less Emily speaks.
Hanazawa: Yeah, you're right! *laugh*
Ishida: But the moment the anime moved to original material in episode 23, Emily started talking again! It feels like the anime staff's long bottled-up love for Emily suddenly got released all at once.
Minagawa: It really does. *laugh* Just today during the recording I thought to myself, oh hey, this is the first time we've heard Emily talk in quite a while...
Kawasumi: Up to episode 22 the show's followed the original series quite closely, but I guess the three episodes starting with 23 are a bit special, aren't they? With all the different characters showing up.
Minagawa: Yeah. Even as an actor for the series, I can't tell what's going to happen at all. I can't envision where it'll be at when it ends.
Hanazawa: Me either. That's why I've really been looking forward to doing the anime original episodes. It seems as though there will be a lot of scenes of the sort we'd never get to see in the manga.
Minagawa: It seems to be at a sort of crossroads, huh? Between original canon and anime canon. I think it's best to look at it as an alternate Pandora Hearts. What do you think, Gil-wise?
Toriumi Kousuke (Gilbert): Well geez, episode 23 ended with a line like "The city is burning". At an absolutely horrible cliffhanger. And then, five brave warriors stepped up to save the day...
Everyone: *laughter*
Toriumi: With an ending like that, it definitely leaves you wanting to see how the conclusion turns out. Though I guess by the time this book is published, it will have been made clear.
Minagawa: The capital cities in Pandora Hearts really have a horrible time of it, don't they.
MochiJun: They really do. Getting dropped into the Abyss, getting set on fire... sorry about that! *laugh*
You mean they tried out for that character!? Surprising secret tales of the auditions
MochiJun: Today I brought with me the pocketwatch that I used as the model for Jack's.
Minagawa: Wow, Pandora Hearts was born from this, huh? It's beautiful!
Kawasumi: If it played the "Lacie" song, I imagine a lot of people would want one of these.
MochiJun: I'd buy one too! And extras for my assistants!
Toriumi: Sensei, you should just let them give you some as a gift. *laugh*
MochiJun: *laughs* Oh, and if you like, I brought some sweets to go with the tea ♥
Minagawa: I've hardly done anything but eat today! *laugh*

MochiJun: You know... this was my first time having one of my works turned into an anime, so pretty much everything that's gone on is new to me, but the first time I completely started to believe "My manga's becoming an anime" was around when I watched the broadcast of episode 8.
Minagawa: Geez, that's late! You sort of had to build up to believing it gradually, huh? *laughs*
Kawasumi: Did it just feel like someone was pranking you the whole time?
MochiJun: Yes. *laughs* I seem to remember being really moved and putting up a Pandora Hearts picture on my blog. Along with my impressions of the anime. Up until then I'd been totally focused on checking things as a supervisor, and the first time I really properly got to watch the show was episode 8. And then I was just shocked-- "Pandora Hearts is an anime now!" *laughs*
Minagawa: Truthfully, I never thought I'd get picked to play Oz.
MochiJun: Why is that?
Minagawa: Before this, I played Oz on the manga version drama CD, but when a series gets made into an anime, they tend to change the cast around a lot from drama CD versions, you know? So really, I thought they might not even let me do an audition. But they were willing to listen to me, and my manager was also like, "Well, it probably won't happen, but do your best," so. When I actually got the part, I was really just... totally shocked. And very happy.
Toriumi: I actually did two auditions for the show.
Minagawa: Huh, really?
Toriumi: At my first audition, I went in to do Gil, but for some reason at the second one they also had me try out for Break.
Everyone: *laughter*
Toriumi: But I think Ishida-san's the only guy for Break, really. Even if I try to do him, I just can't make it work very well.
Minagawa: Oh yeah, you said ever since your audition you'd always pictured Break with Ishida-san's voice, didn't you.
Toriumi: So when the Break role officially went to Ishida-san, I was really pleased. *laugh*
Minagawa: That you hadn't been given the part.
Toriumi: Yeah.
Ishida: I didn't audition for anyone except Break, but let's see, what sort of timing was it when I first got the offer....
Kawasumi: Quite a few steps back in the process. The actual notification that you'd gotten the part took quite a while coming too, didn't it?
MochiJun: I sat in on the auditions with the anime staff, and I remember Hanazawa-san's performance left quite an impression on me. It was the scene where she smacks Break around, remember? All the other candidates played it in sort of a smooth, graceful manner, but Hanazawa-san alone was more like "GRAAAAH---!!" She was the most energetic by far, I remember it really well. *laughs*
Minagawa: She played a very powerful Sharon, huh.
Hanazawa: Up to now I'd never played a character like Sharon who was mentally more adult, so my manager and I went over my performance quite a bit trying to fix things up, like "Say this more meaningfully!" or "Be more evil!" *laugh*
MochiJun: You really brought her to life.
Hanazawa: I seem to remember doing some pretty crazy shouting.
Minagawa: At Ishida-san?
Everyone: *laughter*
Ishida: Being able to do my role with that performance in mind really was nice.
Hanazawa: Ah, I'm glad... I was really desperate for it, so when I heard I got the role, my manager and I actually clasped our hands together all happy. Because truthfully, it was a character we put together practicing for about an hour...
Minagawa: Seriously!?
Hanazawa: Yes. It was great that I got the part, but... I was also kind of panicked about what to do going forward. So I was actually more nervous once the dubbing started.
