What is Family?

Manager: Hey, there is this wonderful opportunity... are you interested?
My friend: Sure, I am.
Manager: It starts in the first week of next month.
My friend: Oh great, the I have some time to brush up my knowledge.
Manager: Yes, it is in the city of _________.
My friend: Oh, is it. But I wanted something in my hometown XXX. It's been more than 3 years in this city and I was hoping to move within the company.
Manager: But this is a very great opportunity.
My friend: But my family is in XXX and it has been some time that I have stayed away. I'd prefer if there is an assignment in XXX.
Manager: Are you married?
My friend: No.
Manager: Then what is the problem?
My friend: What problem?
Manager: You are not married, so no wife and kids. Then what is the issue with moving?

Thankfully, my managers are not like that. Touch wood.

This is what happened to a friend few months back.

While it is arguable if the wish to move is a valid one to be addressed by the company or not, and whether my friend should explore his mercenary qualities just for the sake of moving to his home town, it is plain blasphemy on behalf of the manager not to consider parents and siblings as part of the family. The thought  andphilosophy is American to the core, where the concept of family displays a surprisingly close similarity to the Wolves. Among the wolves too, once the cubs come of age, they are kicked out of home to rear on their own. In the human society though, it is most likely the kids leaving the parents.

The fault is not with the manager. It is with the American based MNCs trying to copy their philosophy of life, professionalism, work culture and HR laws into which ever country they set foot in. However, this soon might go the dollar way. Sad part though will be that some other country will take over the task of spreading corporate imperialism.
