Pie~! (sorta) and the journey there to...

Sep 11, 2007 12:48

So day before yesterday when I went to the store, the very first FRESH apples of the year were there, in nice little paper tote bags. So I bought one thinking "Ah, for I shall make pie~!" I brought said bag home and put it in my fruit bowl for the night. I came back down and found kitty teeth marks on the top 4 apples. I'm pretty darn sure Edward was the culprit. He was licking the apples when I first took them out of the shopping bag. So, I decided thus I would need to cut the teeth marks from the apples. Set up a bowl with sugar and cinnamin for apple slices to go in. Set up another bowl for apple skins and cores. Put down cutting board, got knife. Began cutting apples. Found knife HIGHLY inadequate. HIGHLY. Put down knife, stirred cut apple bits into sugar so they'd stay good, covered bowl and put in fridge. Thought about whether I actually still wanted to make a pie. Had very little energy for the making of pie crust, which I'd bought special butter for and everything.

Went upstairs to read for a while. Midway through this, it pops into my head that what I'd really like is some ice cream. Some CHOCOLATE ice cream. (Yes, I'm pmsing-shush) Had sudden epiphany- They sell ice cream AND knives at the grocery store~! Dropped book, picked up purse, ran out to car, drove into town, went to grocery store. First thing I see as I walk down the first asle... pre-made pie crust~! Weeee- *snatch and put in basket*. Life is officially that much easier, if a little less tasty. Wandered around the store looking for a knife. Found ice cream... no knife. Eventually found knife section. Hidden in last asle I went down. :-P ALSO found apple corer and sectioner tool. Woot~! Bought things, went home. It is now midnight.

Pull out all my pie workings again and put on counter. Began to use new tools to skin, core and cut apples. New tools ROCKED. SOOOOO much faster. Process went something like this: Skin apple, core apple, slice apple. Pause to remove kittens from kitchen counter. BOTH kittens. Wash hands. Lift cutting board and sweep apple slices into bowl. Stir contents of bowl. Skin apple... etc. Once I had a decent amount of apples in the bowl, I added a bit of flour. Gotta have flour so your apple juice doesn't stay all runny on the inside of the pie. Go to look for my 9 inch pie pan. Realise that I gave it away about a month ago. Oops. I did always hate that pie pan. Realise that I do have a 10 inch pie pan... dirty... and in another room. (I used it as a plate when I didn't have any plates clean... then I did dishes but forgot it was there...oops) Realised that I really really don't want to make a lattuswork woven crust anyway. (And I HATE just cut crusts... they really annoy me). Contemplate giving up on pie, covering apple slices with tinfoil and going to sleep. Eat several apple slices to aid thought process.

*thinking thinking thinking thinking thinking thinking*

Does it HAVE to be a PIE? Nooo..... Apple purse~! Unrolled pie crust onto tin foil covered baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of apples, piled HIGH, into the center of crust. Carefully fold crust around the edges of apples. This made something about 8 inches in diameter, with apples showing in the center and some crust around the edges. Decide this isn't spiffy enough. Got out the cinnamon, sugar, brown sugar, butter and flour. Combined these in the correct ratios to get yummy coffee cake crumbles. I then placed the result on the open part of the apple purse. (I've decided this makes it "Pickpockets' delight apple purse"... 'cause, ya know, its open and topped with goodness.) Still had apples left. Put them in a tupperware, then realised I could make a small apple crisp with my soufle cup and the rest of the coffee cake crumbles. Did so. Put all resulting apple yumminess in the oven at 425 degrees, on a tinfoil covered bake sheet because GAH the clean up otherwise. Stood around the kitchen cleaning and tidying. Removed kittens from kitchen counter... again.

Decided that tidying really required a new trash bag. Got one out, tied a knot in one side of the openning because its a contractors bag (meaning BIG). Tied said knot to a kitchen drawer handle. I know, you're asking yourself why I didn't put said bag in my trash can. Weeeeeellll, this would be because my mom didn't take the trash to the dump while I was gone this past Saturday. And the dump is only open on Saturday from 9-1. So I couldn't do it when I got back. So I have a trash bag outside in my outside trash bucket, inside in my kitchen trash, and now, hanging off my drawer handle. It was all working just fine, I was cleaning up. *Pause* I hear funny trash bag noises... Stop to remove kitten from trash bag. Bad Zaboo. No dumpster diving for you~!

My mini apple crisp was delish, I ate it last night. The apple purse must be shared, and thus awaits being presented to the family gathering tonight. *Pause to remove kitten from keyboard* And that, was my journey in apple pie making.
