Designing Web Pages for ebooks!

aka, Revamping the archives and you darn bloody well have STANDARDS!

Yesterday, I was doing a backup of the fanfic files and realised, "OMG! The BoP archive is 5 in April 2011!" that sets off a major panic mode, because, I have been talking about revamping the archive since ... and I haven't done much of anything!

Things to do:

1. header graphics - header pic for the comm and website!

2. site layout stays
  • INDENT codes!
  • get them validated again!
  • check print function - new chapter on new page!
  • new codes for mobile access.
  • html5 - I HATE iThings!
3. check pdb files for errors
  • there are some stray html codes in a couple of files!
  • include meta tags!
  • include TOC for multi-chapters stories.
4. convert to XHTML 1.1 for those still in HTML 4.01. Validate all files!
  • quotes - use smart-quotes?
  • use character codes
  • meta tags! - check the Dublin Core!
5. convert to epub and mobi
  • to include cover images, or not? - TOO MUCH WORK, KIV!
6. ebooks catalogue
  • to catalogue, or not?!
7. code Android apps!
  • I HATE iThings!

And talking about ebooks conversion, Calibre's most recent updates made a couple of improvements for converting txt or PML files. It may or may not be all that useful, because, .pdb efics at the archives are not converted by Calibre. They are hand-coded plain txt files put through DropBook to ensure that they can be read by legacy devices such as the old PalmOS handhelds.

ePubs conversion is another story! Although I can code ePubs manually, I'd go jump off a cliff if I were to do it for nnn number of files for each SansPaper update! So Calibre is my best friend here. Hence, html files that go into Calibre need to be in the xhtml 1.1! But I cheat, and use the plain old pdb files to ePubs.
