1. Science fiction, fantasy, or horror?
I will take the science fiction. Thank you.
I used to read horror-ish stuff, but I haven't much lately, although I still harbor a soft spot for Clive Barker.
2. Hardback, trade paperback, or mass market paperback?
Whatever I can get. I am not picky. (Most of my books are secondhand.)
3. Heinlein or Asimov?
Dunno. Ten, fifteen years ago, it'd've been Heinlein. Don't know why I should have to choose.
4. Amazon or brick-and-mortar?
Nowadays probably more Amazon. I haven't got any proper bookstores within walking distance.
5. Barnes & Noble or Borders?
I want to say Barnes & Noble, but I'm not sure why. Actually, it's because the only Borders I can think of is halfway to my parents' house.
6. Hitchhiker or Discworld?
Hitchhiker. But I haven't read any Discworld yet. Hitchhiker though, I started reading when I was twelve, and I do love it.
7. Bookmark or dogear?
Depends on whether it's a nice book and whether it belongs to me. I will happily dogear stuff that's not important that I keep nice, but if it's not mine or is some nice old copy of something, I will take care of it.
8. Magazine: Asimov's Science Fiction or Fantasy & Science Fiction?
OMNI!! No, I don't know. I think I have read a few issues of Asimov's.
9. Alphabetize by author, by title, or random?
Sadly, I sort of have vague groupings of authors by personal association. I mean, I do keep all of any given author together, but I would be a big fat liar if I said they were in any kind of meaningful order. The only things I insist on is that Doon be next to the Dune series, and that Bored of the Rings be beside the Tolkien.
10. Keep, throw away, or sell?
Oh, goodness. Keep, unless I really hate it or something. Then I give it away or sell it.
11. Year's Best Science Fiction series (edited by Gardner Dozois) or Year's Best SF Series (edited by David G. Hartwell)?
I don't know! I am a crappy fan. I know I used to read anthologies like that, but the Year's Best compilations were never my favorites.
12. Keep dustjacket or toss it?
Oh, keep. Sometimes I use them to mark pages.
13. Read with dustjacket or remove it?
Usually with.
14. Short story or novel?
Depends. Short stories are all the fun-ideas thing, which is sometimes what I want. But then fleshing things out more is also nice.
15. Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Eh. Lemony Snicket's probably more fun. I've sat through a lot of the Harry Potters, but mostly they make me exasperated.
16. Stop reading when tired or chapter breaks?
Chapter breaks when possible.
17. "It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
"The bureaucrat fell from the sky."
18. Buy or borrow?
Buy, I suppose. I will borrow if available, and then buy if I like it.
19. Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation, or browse?
All of the above? I used to browse, now it's probably reviews most.
20. Lewis or Tolkien?
Man, these choices. I guess Tolkien, although neither one is really a primary contributor to my worldview or anything. Can't I have L'Engle?
21. Hard SF or space opera?
Hard.
22. Collection (single author) or anthology (multiple authors)?
I generally seem to like the collection thing more. I just got a China Mieville one what is really great.
23. Hugo or Nebula?
I don't know!
24. Golden Age SF or New Wave SF?
I am not educated in this regard.
25. Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Tidy? MY CONFIDENCE IS GONE
26. Morning reading, afternoon reading, or nighttime reading?
I like reading in the morning and evening, I guess. Although I'll read whenever, who am I kidding.
27. Standalone or series?
I do like serieses, because a lot of the time I like further continuances of a fun world. However more often than not I'm sort of sorry when they arrive.
28. Urban fantasy or high fantasy?
Urban, I expect.
29. New or used?
Used, if possible, though also who would turn down a new book?
30. Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
Right, like I've read anything no one's heard of. Come on.
If we're going for no one READ it, I've read a novel in the Forever Knight universe. It's horrid. Also a novelization of Darkman.
