14 Valentines Day 11 - Recs: Families of Choice

Feb 11, 2012 15:00

Because
zeenell asked and because I needed something to post for today. Because families of choice are one of my bulletproof narrative kinks and because I could probably make a list twice this long, replicating none of the fandoms on this list. Because all of you are just as much family to me as the ones I am related to by blood. ♥

And I Do Appreciate (You Bein’ Round) by passe-simple (American Idol, Kris/Katy)
Kris was still laughing. "I wish you were down here to see this. Oh man."

"What?" Katy repeated, but someone said something very loudly next to Kris, and his phone shut off. Katy scowled at it. He was going to pay for that.

Mrs. Carruthers asked anxiously, "Is everything alright, honey?"

"I'm not entirely sure," said Katy honestly, and then the ruckus came upstairs. Katy had a second to think, Where do I know that voice? and then Adam Lambert stuck his head around the bedroom door.

"Katy!" he said. "Honey! Sweetheart, baby doll, lamb chop. Did you miss me?"

He had clearly tried to dress for Arkansas; he was wearing a hot pink and black plaid shirt and black jeans and the most amazing bedazzled and be-sequined cowboy boots Katy had ever seen in her life. There was also a hat. "Did you think you were going to a costume party?" Katy asked.

Kiddo, if you don't mind my saying so, I think it's about time you quit the Big Apple and came over to Gay Paree. Those folks mean well, but they're his people, not yours. Americans are coming in by the boatload and from all over hell and tarnation-we need to show them we're not all "Yanks." Your cousin Eve is pretty well situated to introduce you around to just about anyone worth knowing. And your dollars would go a long way.

Why be a respectable near-widow? You've done all you could for Roger-no one would argue that. I say get rid of that big house and come here to start fresh.

Besides, you can help Eve keep me from running amok in society. That always amused you.

My end is much the same. Admiral Pike is improving slowly and my research keeps me busy. Still sharing the lab with that physicist flyboy of Pike's, still find him ridiculous, but I wonder what you'll make of him. He's just your type-brilliant, but with some social drawbacks.

I know Eve has extended an invitation to come stay here with her and the admiral (and me). I hope you'll accept. Whatever you decide, you take care of yourself.

And It's Surely To Their Credit (The Five-by-Five Friendship Remix) by
musesfool (Star Trek Reboot, gen)
She's not the only one visiting tonight. She sees a slim figure in the dimness that resolves into Kirk when she gets a little closer. He seems to be communing with the ship, one hand on the flight console, face lifted towards the currently blank viewscreen.

"She's a great lady," he says, and Nyota's heart jumps in startlement and she has to bite back a gasp. "We're going to do great things together, she and I. And you, too, Uhura." He turns and gives her that shit-eating grin that makes her want to slap him at the same time it makes her want to grin back. Tonight, she grins.

"Yes," she says. "We will."

"Wait, just wait," she says again, so near that all he can hear is her voice and the vinyl sounds of her windbreaker as she shifts in place. "Wait. Before we jump, there are two things you should know."

"How important can it be?" Eduardo asks, tone gone cutting with fear and impatience.

"Very!" she goes desperately. "The kind of thing you can't die without knowing!"

"I very sincerely doubt you're the leading expert. People don't go around with an In Case of Death, Say These Things placard on them."

"Stop." Her palm presses flat against his mouth. She's wearing biking gloves, and her hand smells like pleather. "Listen to me. The first thing you need to know is that the water under the Golden Gate is freezing cold. And the second --" she twists sideways, sliding out from under his arm and then she's back on the bridge, behind the railing, standing safe on the pedestrian walkway. She beckons. "The second is that you shouldn't die until you know what it's like to kiss me."

Don't Be Sorry by sparky77 (Merlin, permutations of Merlin/Arthur/Morgan/Gwen)
They only talk about it once during the light of day and it’s when they’re much older. They’re snipping at each other to pass the time, neither of them really paying attention to their insults when Morgana says, “At least I never crawl into bed with you when I have nightmares.”

Arthur freezes and Morgana’s hand covers her mouth like she can’t believe what she just said.

“Charming as always, Morgana,” Arthur says, trying to keep the tone light, but the hurt is evident in his voice.

Haven in a Heartless World by
plingo_kat (Avengers, gen)
The thing is this: the Avengers Initiative shouldn’t work. Steve is the only remotely stable one and he’s a man seventy years out of his time; Tony is the king of fuck-upped-ness, Bruce is a ticking time bomb of zen hormonal rage, Thor is Thor, and both Clint and Natasha have PTSD stamped all over their (heavily redacted) files.

Obviously, they’re the best fighting force the United States has ever seen.

The Emperor's New Clothes by
ignipes (X-Men, gen)
But they have, yet again, returned from a meeting utterly empty-handed. It's remarkably difficult to entice new soldiers to their just and righteous cause of mutant supremacy when the only thing the potential recruits can think throughout the course of the conversation is, "I'm just not sure I can follow somebody who wears a silly cape - oh, shit, I hope the telepath didn't hear that."

Mystique says, hesitantly, "Maybe if we try talking to him again...?"

Emma arches an eyebrow. "Are you volunteering?" she asks.

At Least The War Is Over by
torakowalski (X-Men, Charles/Erik, gen)
A small, brunette head pokes around Raven’s legs, stares at Charles for a moment then ducks back.

Hello, Charles sends to her. He’s never been terribly good with children - not even when he was one. Possibly especially when he was one.

“Mystique says you shouldn’t think at people’s heads. It’s rude,” he’s told in a surprisingly cross, strong southern accent.

“Oh,” Charles says, taken by surprise. “I’m sorry.” He moves forward a little, not trying to crowd Raven, just curious about this little girl. “My name’s Charles.”

My Two Gay Dads by
catwalksalone (Sports Night, Dan/Casey)
After everything settles Charlie works out that he gets to see his dad more now that he's left home. It seems weird but Charlie gets to like being a weekend kid. He has his own room in his dad's new apartment and guilt will get you a lot of stuff. And he has Danny back. Danny never comes to the house to pick Charlie up, but he's always there — at the park, at the movies, at the ice rink, at the apartment, wherever they go.

Charlie watches his dads. He sees how easy they are together. He sees his dad laughing, real proper laughing. He sees how Danny looks at his dad when he thinks neither of them are looking. He's seven, he's not stupid. He wonders how long it will take them to figure out.

Snips and Snails by trollprincess (Shelter, gen)
It's California and it's five years from now, and Jeanne is calling him after school on a Wednesday and says, I'm getting married and he's wonderful, his name is Danny and he's a high school teacher and you should come, you should come.

Cody doesn't know how to react. He's got soccer cleats dripping muddy grass onto the kitchen floor and Sam bouncing all over the kitchen and barking happily and his mom is on the phone deliberately not saying, I'm getting married so now I'll be good at this mothering thing.

He mumbles something about homework and hangs up.

Friendly Competition by
siegeofangels (SGA, gen)
Elizabeth was heroically not giggling. "Yes, Rodney, I simply can't count the times I've seen you hug someone."

Jack held up one finger--wait--to each of them. "This is not a game," he said, and backed away slowly to disappear down a corridor and, probably, stake out personal quarters to establish as a hug-free zone.

They watched him go. "Well," Elizabeth said. "If it was, we'd be tied."

Rodney looked at her. She looked back, and raised an eyebrow.

"Double points for Daedalus personnel," he said, and ran down the stairs as Elizabeth took off in the direction of her office.

Okay, look, they deserved a little fun, all right?

844,739 Ways to Eat a Hamburger by minervacat (SGA, gen)
"All right, let's hit the road," John said.

Rodney said, "This is the worst idea you've ever had," but he struggled to his feet from where he'd been sitting on Teyla's new suitcase and slung his laptops over his shoulders.

Teyla said, "Why would we want to hit the road?"

Ronon said, "Can I drive?"

"Oh, God," Rodney said.

"No," John said to Ronon, and then, "It's an expression, Teyla. A metaphor. We're just going to drive on the road. Rodney, shut the hell up."

Later he would think that he should have just recorded those sentences and saved them on tape for future use - would have saved a lot of time.

Hindsight, of course, is always 20/20.

Uncle Alex used to be a policeman, like Officer Matt on TV. But that was a long time ago. Now, Uncle Alex takes me to school and picks me up at the end of the day. After school, me and Uncle Alex play catch or bake cookies in funny colors or read my school book. Some afternoons, he plays Mario with me. Uncle Alex always plays as Luigi and says that Luigi can't jump very well and that's why he dies a lot. I think he's just not very good at it.

Every Summer, we drive for a long time and go camping. Daddy and Mommy and Uncle Alex and me always get there first and start putting up tents. Then Uncle Linc and Aunty Sofia come and sometimes they bring LJ. LJ's my cousin but he's all grown up so he's more like an uncle.

You can come and talk to me at Dreamwidth too! (
