you shouldn't feel bad that you're a victim of much larger societal forces at work, and it'd be unfair for others to ignore that perspective. perhaps now is a good time to work on your writing career? your life would be the quintissential bohemian story.
I've actually thought about writing or doing some work within the field, and it occurred to me that if I can't write, being an editor would be a great job to have.
Only problem with that is it seems that word of mouth and networking is still very much a driving factor in how you get your career going in that field.
hmmm, ever consider going to grad school? you can get a higher degree and build up a writing portfolio. plus professors are usually well connected people who will probably know who you can talk to.
Or if not grad school (they're cutting enrollment like crazy over here), maybe a creative writing class at the local community college or a writing club or something. :)
