I did a little better at getting the calendar picture done before the end of the month this time.
This piece has a sort of folk art sensibility. If I'd actually put sashes with rosettes on the animals, as I was considering, it would be even more folk art like.
The little topiary orange tree is there mostly because I drew the animals a little too far to the right, but liked that drawing well enough that I knew that if I erased it and tried to re-draw it more centrally, I wouldn't like the new drawing nearly as much. I needed something to fill that empty space on the left, and thinking of the kumquats on the Lunar New Year stamps my mom sent me reminded me of the topiary orange trees in the
Lady and the Unicorn tapestries I saw at the Cluny Museum in Paris at about this time last year.
I used Q-tips to apply glue to the hearts. The technique worked quite well; if I can remember long enough, I should attempt snowflake shadows again for the December page using this method.
