a quick pictorial chronology of star trek and crewmember fashions

(sparked by cd's post)

the original star trek... when female crewmembers wore fashionable party dress uniforms just in case captain kirk felt like taking one of them clubbing... to the party in his pants that is! now, to be fair captain kirk bent the dress code rules as well, his female alien-conquering manliness proving too much to be contained in those boring normal uniforms.

star trek: tng. there was a bit of fashion evolution on this show, with troi actually sporting the classic short skirt regulation female uniform for a while before settling on her questionably in-code one-piece stretchy thing with the plungy neckline. didn't some other crewmembers give her shit for that? like, ro or something? ro rocked my fucking world. oh, ro! in later seasons troi actually ended up dressing like the rest of the star trek female crew, which is to say, normally.

star trek: deep space nine. arguably (okay, okay, i said arguably!) the best of the star trek shows. flaunting of regulation uniforms with short skirts or tight unitards hadn't reached this distant outpost of the federation. also, kira and dax kick any of the other shows' permanent crew ladies' asses. oh kira. ::swoons::

star trek: voyager. everyone wore the same uniform until it was revealed to tuvac in a vision that their neilsen ratings were plunging. a sexy big-breasted alien who wasn't afraid to wear skin tight clothing would rescue them!

enterprise. and we finally come full circle. now, i have to admit i've watched in total about 20 minutes of this show. so maybe there's a perfectly good reason why standard female crew issue includes a half-shirt and low-rise pants. maybe it's a vulcan thing. like... before they got all logical they were serious clubbers. i know nothing about this show other than how it SUCKS and how eerily much scott bakula reminds me of dubbya.

fanboy: star trek, tv, sci fi, society, gender
