For Love Of…
A Final Fantasy VII Fanfiction
Author: Sanjuno Shori Niko
Summary: Here they come to save the da~ay...! (Hey! psst! Hey! I just realized that at this point in the story Sephiroth has been exposed to Cid for five years without any mitigating factors or outside influences. I don't even know what to do with that. XP)

(In which Cid and Sephiroth saddle gear up.)
“Mother!” Sephiroth rose to his feet in a rush of silver hair and black leather, wide green eyes locked on the radio scanner as it spit information on troop movements and coded phrases straight out of the Turk Handbook Sephiroth had lifted off of Tseng so many years ago.
“I heard!” Cid was already halfway across the room, grabbing up a pre-packed kitbag and tossing it at Sephiroth. Cid slung his own pack over his shoulder and burst out the door. “C’mon, let’s git movin’! We need ta git those boys ‘a yers before Shin-Ra’s goons catch up ta ‘em.”
“Yes, mother.” Sephiroth followed Cid out the door, pack in one hand and Masamune leaping from its place on the wall to smack into Sephiroth’s outstretched hand. “Will we be taking the Tiny Bronco?”
“Yeah.” Cid stowed his gear under his seat, zipping up his flight suit and making sure his spear was secure. Sephiroth provided his mother with spears the way some cats provided their favourite humans with mice - Cid had quite the collection going now - and of them all, the Venus Gospel was Cid’s favourite. The first stage of the pre-flight checks always involved making certain the weaponry was properly in its place. Cid started the cockpit checks as Sephiroth went over the outside of the plane, a well-practiced example of teamwork. “The damn fools’re cuttin’ a straight path ta Midgar, but the plane should git us there before ‘em - especially now that the kid did the smart thing and ditched the Turk girl’s motorcycle. I figure he couldn’t find the tracker, but they ain’t gonna make it in on foot. Might as well put a ‘return ta sender’ stamp on ‘em and mail ‘em back ta Shin-Ra.”
“Zachary is… resourceful, and Cloud could keep up with a Soldier First even as an un-augmented Cadet.” Sephiroth stowed his kit and bound his hair with quick efficiency, strapping in as Cid started the engines. “You would be surprised, I think, by what they are capable of - especially together. They will probably be able to obtain transportation of some kind.”
“You’d better hope they don’t move too fast.” Cid’s warning came clearly through the headset as the plane taxied out.
Sephiroth raised a silver eyebrow at the back of his mother’s head. “Why so?”
“My birds’re fast, kid - near about the fastest things in the sky - but there ain’t nothin’ I kin do ta make time slow down. If those boys’a yers rush too much they’ll hit the Shin-Ra blockade before we kin git there. If that happens… well. Too late is too late.” Cid’s grim warning made Sephiroth pale dramatically.
It had to turn out for the best; Sephiroth would not be able to bare it if it did not. Sephiroth clung to the reassurances he had repeated to himself many times over the last five years. Zack was strong and clever, and Cloud was determined and quick. They had each other to depend on, and they could certainly hold on long enough for Sephiroth to get there. They would be fine.
They had to be.

So... we all know what Sephiroth is going to find when he reaches the bluff where Zack got cornered at the end of his Great Escape. Good thing Cid and Sephiroth have been adventuring all over the Planet searching for run-away SOLDIERs, RAVENs, and COPYs. Mastered Materia are a Good Thing when it comes to dramatic twelfth hour rescues. If Sephiroth has learned anything from Mama Cid over the last five years it's the inherent human instinct that says "MINE!" There are going to be Reasons, wonderfully plotty Reasons for Zack and Cloud and AVALANCHE and whee!
Anyway, I need to go put real person adult-type clothes on and go to work now. Have a lovely day my dears.
