GDC 2010 in the books.

I survived yet another GDC. No blisters this year, which is good. I have found that I typically need to get shoes a size or two bigger than typical because my feet are wider at the front and wearing tighter shoes cause my toes to rub together when I walk a lot.

One of the CA managers (who is in fantastic shape) swears by some bear-footie type things that change the biomechanics of locomotion.

I like a lot of what he was talking about, but in the crowded confines of the Moscone Center, I would be concerned about people stepping on my toes. >_<

I talked to many many people about many many things. The new hotness this year was the explosion of games in the social networking sites. A friend of mine has taken a new position as the lead designer on Farmville, one of the more famous ones.

I was contacted about working on an online game that licenses a popular webcomic. I can't state specifics but I'll let you know as soon as certain contracts are signed and it's safe to discus in public. I am really, really psyched up about this.

I met many indy developers and passed out many cards. I may get a lot of contract work this year. I doubt I will get rich doing it, but many of the ideas sound strong.

The big thing at this show was google giving away free droid phones to people who signed on to develop content or in some cases, just listened to their development talks. The CAs did such a good job working with them, they donate dozens (multiple dozens, man) of droids to the CAs. These things came with a free month of unlimited usage, too. 0_o

The CAs (volunteers) are very popular with the GDC and the vendors and we get a bunch of cool stuff donated to the org. I had a tiny chance of winning one of the droids but it didn't happen. I got a cool book though.

I also ran into Mike Pondsmith at the show. He ran R Talsorian Games, publisher of Cyberpunk and Teenagers From Outer Space. Scott Ruggels did some work for them back in the day. I might get some work from him in the near future if things work out right. ^_^

All in all, an awesome time. I lined up a bunch of contract work and had a blast. The Independant Game Festival featured some awesome work including an artgame that ran on an Atari 800 console. Pure geekgasm. I love this show and can't wait for 2011.
