Title: The X Factor
Pairing: Koyama/Ryo/Shige
Author: me. ezyl. XD.
Rating: PG, all the way to M if I feel up to it.
Warnings: Swearing...later? Sex...later? Angsty, somewhat. This is just a preview, after all. Un-beta'd, as well.
Summary: Because he hates math.
Notes: This is my first attempt at something JE, after reading some of
misticloud 's amazing stuff. I decided to go AU, since I'm obviously not the best canon author. And I skipped running in the morning for this. You'd better be thankful.
So it had all come down to this. After a while, he supposed it would’ve been the most obvious thing ever, but in those first few moments-when he had still been that lone electrode spark drifting through the vast unsolved field of algorithmic shock, sea of unconsciousness-he really hadn’t a clue. But then again, could he not have known? Really chose to remain hidden from the glaring ideals of truth?
It was impossible.
It’s like one of those simple grade-school math problems, the kind that teacher wrote on the board in a million forms, wasting boxes and boxes of chalk on the sticky-fingered kindergarteners, barely old enough to tie their shoelaces.
X + 2 = 3, she scribbles over the blackboard, Evaluate for X.
As a five-year old, he had struggled through it. His parents wouldn’t admit he was slow, and had implored the director to put him in the fast class against recommendations from his aunt. Having only just learned the week before to count to one hundred, he was unable to understand how to isolate the variable by subtracting 2 from both sides, and ending up with the 1.
Shige had laughed, his handsome, winning laugh, dark and throaty, the sort of laugh that sounded more African than Japanese. Even back then, Shige had been charming and intelligent, aiding the teacher by patiently reviewing the steps for him, over and over again.
“It’s simple math, really.”
He’d follow, a little clumsier by Shige’s side, but he’d follow. That was how he had planned it. Him and Shige, conquerors, solving every single one of life’s algorithms, side by side, together and happy forever. 1 + 1 = 2.
The X factor undeniably changes things.
He doesn’t recall the exact date when it began, but it was definitely around the time Ryo made his entrance. Grand, bold Ryo. Ryo who took their world by storm and never looked back, leaving them all reeling behind from the dust spun from his heels.
He had liked Ryo from the very beginning. There was something fascinating about this new creature that landed in their kingdom and invariably, like a British colonier against the Aboriginal tribes, took monopoly of their classroom and the teacher. Like a snake charmer or an elephant mahout, Ryo had grabbed the reins of the school with his beautiful wide grin and devilishly wispy bangs.
And like many things that are swept up with the storm, Ryo had taken his heart along for the ride.
