Palin and Anti-Birth control - "Feminists for Life"

Sep 02, 2008 07:45

This seems to be a point of contention.

On the birth control stance, it is Palin's membership with the anti-choice organization Feminists For Life, coupled with her anti-choice and pro-abstinence only educational views that is raising ire.

Feminists For Life is anti-abortion. They are also not proponents of birth control.

From the FFL FAQ: Preconception issues including abstinence and contraception are outside of our mission. Some FFL members and supporters support the use of non-abortifacient contraception while others oppose contraception for a variety of reasons. FFL is concerned that certain forms of contraception have had adverse health effects on women.

FFL is "concerned" that hormonal contraception will have adverse effects on a fetus, not on the woman.

FFL is not an organization that is contraceptive friendly.

FFL is not a feminist organization.

They even put up the idea that counseling about abortion and birth control is "harmful" to victims of rape:

Furthermore, birth control counseling and abortion often indirectly contribute to the victim's sense of shame, guilt, and blame for what is happening, since she is told to "take control" and "be responsible" for her "sexual activity," implying that this situation is, indeed, within her power to control.

Because, Gods know while the rape was not the woman's fault, she sure as hell can't control the reproductive outcome and gain back some of her power. Oh no. We can't have that.
