"Everytime an 'if' becomes a 'what if', a parallel universe is created. Another path that we might have gone down. Some may have come into existence hundreds of years ago, some only mere moments ago. In fact, as we speak a universe is coming into existence where you and I never had this conversation."
Rodney paused mid-explanation, searching his audience for some sign of comprehension.
"In fact, that would be a marvellous place to be, seeing that I have just wasted a perfectly good explanation on people who couldn't tell a parallel universe from a tomato."
He busied himself sliding a new transparency under the projector, and wondered briefly about the wisdom of turning down that military contract. The papers were still in his briefcase, perhaps it wasn't too late to..
No. Teaching may be stressful, but just imagining the kind of people he would have to deal with in the US Military made him faint. Hmm...must be time for lunch.
"Allright everybody! If we've finished our late afternoon gossip, perhaps we could please copy down tonight's assignments and maybe I can get out of here before I fall into a hypoglycaemic coma."
The momentary doubts had to be lunch related, he thought to himself later, when he was alone in his office. But another look wouldn't hurt he decided, sliding the folder out of his briefcase and settling down to read, turkey sandwich in hand.
