So the date came and went and Armageddon seems no closer or more real. Who would've thunk it??
Potential Spoilers below. Read at own risk:
I toddled off to see the remake with Bruce and Ange and also Peter (an ex's current bf). It was all highly entertaining with a few nice reinterpretations of key scenes. It was essentially a word for word remake of the highly impressive original (circa 1976). The acting was competant esp with Mia Farrow in the role of Damien's nanny. It was a nice touch adding the vatican at the beginning and end also.
I did desperately miss the original music score however. Nothing can equal the inexhorable relentless drive of the black mass created for the original.
Still there were a few nice scary bits and fun to be had by all:).
Main gripe: The original Damien was made doubly chilling by his apparent innocence. Horrible things happened around him as the forces of evil paved his way for him whilst he appeared untouched by evil himself. In this remake he appears to experience malice and an awareness of evil. It makes him less of a conundrum and thus less scary. It is most telling in his final grin at the camera. In the original Damien turns to smile at the camera and it is wonderful how innocent and unaffected his smile is after the macabre and demonic climax. It is VERY disturbing. He should NOT look like that. It is so WRONG. In the remake he grins...no actually he grimaces at the camera. Oh yeah he knew what was going on. He is one VERY evil kid...YAWN! Wheres the mindfuck in that?
All in all: a competant remake no worse but ultimately no better than the entirely satisfactory original.
