Mau Mause, also known as Mouse, came to us as a fluke really.
He was a stray that wandered into our friends backyard one day. While she would have loved to keep him, after months of trying, her cat's would not stop attacking him, so she asked if we would take him. Like there was ever any doubt, since mom is a big softy!
When he first came to live with us, we were told he was a girl, which we quickly found was way wrong. He also came with a girly name (which for the life of me I can't remember) that had to go. The first thing we noticed was the fact that he squeaked, and after coupling that with the fact that I used to baby talk to him and the other cats by going "mau mau mau," his new name was born.
It's kind of fun to have a cat named Mause when you think about it!
We came to find that he was almost if not completely deaf, and that he was aggressive toward our other animals, not because he was mean, but because they'd sneak up on him un-knowingly and startle him. He had a screw or two loose, and would spend hours at a time sitting and staring at a wall, or piece of furniture, just meowing his head off, as if to say "help, I'm lost, and I can't find my way back!" And most of all, he was just a sweet old man who wanted to be loved.
He turned out to be Gabe's cat more than anyone else, and used to love to be near him. He'd be totally content to sit in Gabe's room with him for hours, just to be near him.
We noticed over the past few weeks that he was loosing a lot of weight and was getting abscesses at the base of his tail. The last two days we found him pacing in circles in the garage, as if he was afraid to stop moving. Finally, after two days of watching this and hearing his cries, we decided that the only humane thing to do would be to let him have his peace.
The vets and emergency clinic wanted up to $187 and we just didn't have that kind of money, so mom did the only thing she could thing of, aside from killing him herself, and called the ASPCA to come pick him up. She made up a story that he was a stray that had wandered into our garage.
And like that it was over... they came and picked him up and just as quickly as he came into our life, he was gone.
He was a good cat, a bit strange, but a sweet lovable old man.
RIP Mau Mause
