Well, you certainly just went a lot farther in making me want to read it than anyone else ever has by saying, "The ending though, the ending was superb." I place a premium on a good ending, and I feel like every Stephen King book I've read starts magnificently and then descends into nigh-unintelligible nonsense in the final act.
Hmmmm, like I need another long series to read, anyway. ; )
Well, I will say that the "endings" to some of the books are rather disappointing, but overall, it was worth it. Of course, what I'd really like is to find someone whose opinion is that the ending was terrible, and to ask them why they thought that.
Hee. I envy you getting to read it in one long sit-down. I got into the series a little after Wizard and Glass was released (middle/early high school) and had to wait until I was well into college for the next volume.
I'm so glad that you liked the ending! I've been suspecting that I'm the only one. I thought it was absolutely perfect for what the series was, given who and what Roland was.
I agree with you! I honestly think that there really was no other way to end it. Like King says himself, he had no choice but to write it that way, because that was the way it was. Or something like that.
On the whole, I really liked the Dark Tower series, though I felt the last two books were somewhat rushed, as if King was trying to just get them done before another van hit him or something.
As to the ending, I sort of felt like it was a cop-out for a little while, but then just settled on not liking it despite not being able to think of a better way to end it myself.
If he would have done his usual ending though, like say, having a flaming chariot swoop down out of the heavens and yank Roland away into the atmosphere - God, Needful Things had a TERRIBLE ending - I would have been mad. But I can see where it might seem like a cop out.
I was so excited because the last oh, two hundred and fifty pages or so of book seven were getting so good. I loved the Dandelo bit. I really liked the portrayal of the Red King. I think if King would have created some epic battle right at the end I would have been mad about that too. I'm just really relieved that I can walk away from the series happy, and not disappointed.
Also, Wizard and Glass is still my favorite book in the series, hands down.
