I had a horrible nightmare last night. It was one of those very vivid ones where you are certain it's real.

I was at some sort of cabin out in the woods with my kats. It was late afternoon, and the sky was spattered with gray clouds.

Somewhere in the area, a volcano was set to explode. It wasn't nearby, I remember that. A few people had left the area just on principle, but lots hadn't.

Well, just to be safe I thought I should get my kats into the car. It was either that or the cabin, and I wanted to be mobile in case there was trouble. I'd get one kat in, then go hunting for the other one and the first one would wander out of the car...it took me a little while to get them both in the car.

Just about the time I shut all the doors, the air was suddenly full of swirling gray ash. It was like a solid boiling mass pressing up against the sides of the car. I couldn't see through it - I couldn't see anything at all outside the car except in one direction.

I had an audio recorder with me, and thought how cool it would be to talk about what it was like to see this - so I could play it later for my friends. I described it in detail, the natural beauty of it all.

It was starting to get a bit warm in the car.

It suddenly occurred to me that the ash could very easily interfere with the car's engine. That I might not be able to get it started, and I certainly wouldn't want to turn on the vent. That stuff could cook us!

The car started without any trouble, and I drove slowly in the direction I could still see. Looking back through the window, I saw that some sort of vent had opened up next to where the car was sitting, and that's where most of the ash had come from - it roiled skyward out of the crack in the ground. I saw several similar cracks across the landscape. I quickly realized this was not a safe place to be at all. I was nowhere near the volcano, but apparently there was plenty of action right here.

Fear gripped my heart as I drove down the hill towards an intersection in a small valley. I wanted to go straight, but lava now was flowing down the hill in front of me, and another flow closed in from the right.

I took the left turn, but was quickly overtaken by the lava flow. The car stopped moving as molten rock devoured its tires. I was getting very hot now.

I only had a few moments to take any action. I thought that perhaps nobody would hear my recording after all. And I looked at my kats, uncomfortable and relying on me for their safety. But I had none to offer. I opened the car door and tried to leap out past the lava flow, to make a run for it. But it was too far - I landed face first in the flow and burned.

----

I woke up. It was about 3:30. My heart was pounding and my kats were sleeping at the foot of the bed. I went out for a cigarette to calm myself down. Before going back to sleep, I spent some time cuddling my cats.
