It hit him fast and it hit him hard. The sudden wave of loneliness engulfed Sasuke as he stood out in the downpour, waiting for his fellow team Hebi members to return. Even after so many years on the run, searching for him, Sasuke was still prone to bouts of feeling. It was getting better though, and he knew it. Slowly but surely, he was becoming numb. This numbness wasn’t an unanticipated side-effect of the icy rain which he stood in, but a purposeful attempt to destroy all attachments brought by that ill-fated meeting. His heart was on the verge of dying.
There was a time when he was happy enough. Fighting to surpass his genius of a brother, being with his mother and father, just living freely, yet this ended as soon as the demon Vengeance was birthed. However, on his way to his life’s desire, this retreat into utter solitude was trifled with by the unwavering summons of a fellow lonely soul who wished to undo the atrocities of a meaningless life; a first real friend and destined mortal enemy. It was he who shook the foundations of the Uchiha’s unwavering heart and began to undo the hurt singed into the Uchiha’s heart.
Despite all attempts to temper his raging heart, this foray into blissful happiness was nothing but a short-lived falsehood; a façade that endeavored to mask the goal which he had fervently strived for. It was an ironic twist of fate which clearly hinged its cliché on the facets of a superficial reunion between two brothers. He once again took on the guise of a cold, emotionless individual.
It was just a guise. It was… just a guise…
No human soul, no matter how twisted or vain, wishes for the deafening silence which he took upon himself that cursed day, and this Uchiha was no different. The imperative realization of this universal truth was one that he had experienced when he was still a young child. Sitting on the lake’s edge, staring back at the reflection that gave him those disparate looks of despair, he was educated into this particularity of human nature. That’s why no matter how hard he tried his humanity wouldn’t dissipate as he wished it too. Even now, years later, his heart clings to the little bits of fleeting emotion which burst through at unwanted moments.
It is at these times when he momentarily lapses into his human emotions, that Sasuke is alone. At these times, his once expressionless eyes have a faint glimmer of sadness and his heart cries the tears which he can not. It is these days when he stands alone in the grandeur of nature waiting, that he sees how inconsequential he really is. It is in these moments when Sasuke is truly, ever, really afraid.
