Charity

When I was a working man, giving to charity was automatic. I picked several causes I wanted to support, and had auto-pay monthly from my bank account. Not a lot, considering my income. But, I supported 6 causes, for many years.

Toward the end, I only had 2 - Water Aid, and Action Aid. The former is self explanatory, it helped fund water well projects in developing parts of Africa. The second, was I helped pay for the education of a young Palestinian girl in the Gaza Strip.

The thing about giving to charity is two-fold. First, you are obviously helping a cause. The second, is to make you care, about what's going on in the part of the world in question. This, I would argue, is at least as important as the first. Every time there was an incursion in Gaza, I would get very concerned, and vocal about it. To this day, though I no longer give (I have no income at this moment), I still care immensely about the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank. I will always care, and part of that includes extreme frustration regarding the awful discrimination and oppression endured by Palestinians daily, which goes largely unreported in Western media outlets.

One of the first things I do after I return to Britain and get a job, will be to get back into giving monthly. Giving aid to Palestinians will always make my list. I will also be looking into ways to contribute to "green" initiatives, in developing parts of the world.

"There are 1000s of ways to show you care.
Pick one, and get busy"
-a bit of fluff
