just got back from melbourne, after spending the night camping in the old elephant enclosure at the zoo - me and the big boys finally got organised, and went to the Roar'n'Snore. i am completely exhausted now, but wow, it was a fun ride.
we arrived at the zoo with our sleeping bags and pillows, had refreshments and an introduction with the hosts (who were fantastic) and other guests, and then ate a delicious BBQ dinner in the former home of Bong Su, the zoo's alpha male elephant! then we went on a night walk of the zoo, were we got to feed apples to Bong Su, fed the peccaries and visited the slow lorus, touched the Honduran milksnake, and basically saw and experienced some amazing things. we also were regaled with some incredible stories by our hosts, Jackie and Sarah - many stories, about animals escaping and crazy people trying to pat the lions and keepers getting punched by the polar bear, were courtesy of the annual Zoo christmas party!
anyway, by the time we finished it was 11pm, and we came back to camp for supper, then we all collapsed with exhaustion. the wake-up was 7am, and we got to feed the giraffes! it was over by 9am, and we were free to wander the zoo for the rest of the day, although my kids were so tired we folded early. but it was an amazing thing to do, and anyone who's into the zoo should go check it out - expensive, but a good save-up-for-xmas present, and incredible for kids over 7.
now, though, i'm totally shagged. and more proffing and editing tonight for the wednesday deadline! whew. but the zoo trip was worth it.
