Review of Tenshi

I'm feeling really sluggish with words today so I'm going to try a new way of reviewing this movie I'm uploading atm. without me having to think much ;D

What movie am I talking about??

The name of the movie is Tenshi, meaning angel, released in 2006 starring Kyoko Fukada, Shigeru Izumiya, Akemi Kobayashi, Saori Koide, Ei Morisako. Most of whom I have never heard of/seen before.. But Kyoko Fukada's in it. And she plays an angel. So nothing else matters ^_^

What is it about?

Quoted from imdb.. "One day, an angel materializes before Kato's eyes. While the angel seems like an average girl with a passion for gin and lime, she sports a pair of big white wings. Only lonely-hearted people can see her. She may seem ordinary, but this angel touches hearts and transforms lives."

Not quoted from anywhere.. The story is about Kyoko meeting a shy part time worker at a convenience store who's secretly in love with his co-worker; a single dad who's trying to find a balance between his busy job, his 5 year old daughter and his girlfriend who's unwilling to commit; best friends who run a catering business; and a high school girl who suddenly became an outcast because of a rumour, and was bullied to sit next to a girl they call Buta (not Nobuta XD). The Angel mysteriously weaves in and out of their lives and we see how they are affected by her presence (whether they like it or not ^^).

Eye candies?

Other than the angelic Kyoko Fukada who's so cute that she out-cutes a little girl, a rabbit and some kittens. There's also the drop-dead gorgeous Akemi Kobayashi (who looks so familiar but I can't remember where I saw her before, from certain angles she kinda looks like Haruka Ayase).

For the female viewers (or otherwise, I don't judge), there's Asahi Uchida (the only young-ish guy protagonist in the movie). Dunno what else to say. Google him.

Anything else?

Hiromi Nagasaku, who played Aoi Miyazaki's older self in Su-Ki-Da, is also present here in one of the more convincing sub-stories of the film. Again she reminds us that she looks so much like Aoi-chan (+-10 years) it's scary. They must be related somehow.

What I like/dislike about the movie?

The story is very simple and straight-forward but the execution is just beautiful. It looks great and all the main characters are so lovable. The movie starts of very strong and the special effects used for the floating Angel is very nicely done. She reminds me of Ryukku from Death Note: The Movie; less cartoony, replace apples with gin & lime. Kyoko Fukada steals the show even though she doesn't say anything throughout the movie.

It's cute. In some parts it does get almost unbearably cute but most of the time the cuteness is the most appealing point Tenshi. Did I mention that it's cute?

Sadly after a bright start things weren't as interesting for me towards the end of the movie. It's certainly not horrible. But it seemed as though the director either ran out of time as things seemed a bit rushed to reach a conclusion or out of ideas as none the conclusions themselves were anything spectacular. Perhaps it was done intentionally and they wanted the movie to end on a low-key instead of something special.

It was as if the story hinted many times of a climax to come or a connection between the few people who could actually see the Angel. But in the end there wasn't really a connection and the climax never came (wait, that sounded kinda wrong O_o).

It's a feel-good movie and there are no 'bad guys'. Great movie to watch when you need something light, bubbly and uplifting.

Rating: 6.5/10
