I'm planning on starting up that blog that I've been talking about for weeks now, but as I'm still not really sure how to go about it all, especially what to do/put on LJ and what on there, that I figured I'd put this one up here until I've figured that out.
My rambly thoughts on Torchwood last night.
I must say I’ve never been the hugest fan of Torchwood. I love the characters, but the story lines can be quite dark and sometimes deeply disturbing which I do enjoy, but not long times in a row. A complete 24-episode series is therefore a bit much for me. I like these short series much more. I can cope better with the heavy storylines.
I should address the elephant in the Torchwood fandom room first concerning Children of Earth. I never cared much for Ianto. I thought he was always seriously underused and therefore never really grew very attached to him. I therefore feel no hate towards Russell T. Davies at all (even though I do wonder why he made Jack so incredibly evil in the last episode, which made everyone hate the lead in the show) and I couldn't wait to see what he would do for this series.
It’s been a while since CoE and things in my mind have been slightly forgotten, so to me Captain Jack is once again Captain Jack and so he was in this first episode. Loved seeing John Barrowman again in all his Captain and (new?) coat glory. For me, he stole all scenes he was in with his wit, his lines and his charm.
I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It was fun, disturbing, well-acted, action-packed, emotional and intriguing; everything a Torchwood episode should be for me. It wasn't mindblowing (figuratively speaking), but I very much enjoyed myself and the hour ran by.
I particularly enjoyed the performances by Mekhi Phifer (who I also adore in Lie To Me. Why the hell was that show cancelled? But that discussion's for another day) and Bill Pullman. The first being slightly annoying, but in a bad ass-type way. And Bill Pullman being an absolute creeper.
Not sure yet about Esther Drummond as a character. At first I thought it was quite stupid Jack trusted her so quickly. Until that clever reveal came. I liked it. Simple, but it made me go: Ah yes of course, why did I underestimate Jack's judgement?
I was really intrigued from the start with the plot, as is usual with Torchwood. Many questions arose, few were answered. But there’s nine episodes left to do that in. I have faith RTD will manage to address most of them.
Loved the little reference to Owen. Nicely done. The stabs at Wales were a bit cheap in my opinion and unnecessary. But I guess they had to put in the reference in that this was indeed not the USA or something. I could have done without.
I still don’t particularly understand why they went to the US with this, because it seemed like a story that could have just as well been done in the UK, but I guess expanding your brand is part of today’s television world. If that means taking the institute to the US so be it. As a non-Brit I have very little problems with that and I like US shows as much as UK shows, so I’m sure I will enjoy the next few episodes just as much as the previous series. For me, it still had very much the feel of Torchwood.
A little sidenote, when can we expect Captain Jack back on Doctor Who? I hope soon!
What did you guys think?
